HAMILTON — Colgate hosted its annual Raider Academic Honor Roll Luncheon on Tuesday for this year's student-athlete members and faculty.
The 2015-16 class of honorees consists of 425 student-athletes, cheerleaders and student trainers, including 17 who achieved perfect 4.0 grade-point averages in at least one semester during 2015. The 4.0 honorees are highlighted by football's
Ty Edmond and golf's
Ian Lynch earning 4.0s in both the spring and fall semesters of 2015.
This year's total number of honor-roll recipients represents a 54.5-percent increase over last year's 275 members.
The student-athletes were joined at their tables by members of the Colgate faculty, who took time out to support the academic achievements during Tuesday's recognition.
To be eligible for the Raiders Academic Honor Roll, members had to post a GPA of at least 3.25.
Angela Marathakis, Colgate's Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services, served as master of ceremonies. The keynote speaker was Teresa Olsen, Director of Strategic Programs and Operations, Career Services. Closing remarks were from Vice President and Director of Athletics
Victoria M. Chun '91, MA'94.
"I can't tell you how proud I am of you," Chun told the audience. "But you didn't do it alone. You have your trainers, your coaches, your professors and your administrators. They are all here for you, and their goal is to make you as successful as possible.
"Being great takes a lot of sacrifice and it takes good decisions. I want to thank you for your sacrifice and urge you to keep making good decisions."
In addition, Kaitlyn Parker from women's ice hockey and
Nick Laub from men's tennis spoke on behalf of the Class of 2016.
"What we have accomplished is something truly incredible: we are the student-athletes of Colgate University," Parker said. "To perform here at the top of your game and achieve academic success at the same time takes focus, dedication and hard work.
"We take all those life lessons we have learned from our sports and use them in the classroom. That is why we are so successful."
Laub spoke about how far he has come academically in his four years at Colgate and how athletics has aided in his academic achievements.
"If you're like me, there is no question of a connection between intellectual advancement and athletics."
