Chung wins doubles and singles match

CUMBERLAND, R.I. - The Colgate men's tennis team hit the road to defeat Holy Cross on Saturday, winning 4-1. The win moves the Raiders to 5-5 on the season, and 1-0 in league play.

"What a massive, massive league opening win today for the boys," said Head Coach Bobby Pennington. "To summarize the match we swept the doubles quickly, played very efficiently top to bottom one through three doubles. The singles definitely got really wild with three matches going to third sets; credit to Tim Vargas and Aidan Chung for winning in straight sets. The match of the day was definitely Lochlan's at one singles, he was down a match point and ended up winning 7/6 in the third set to clinch our 4-1 victory. That brings our record to five and five overall, and we need to get ready to beat Boston tomorrow.. We have a very cohesive ball club top to bottom playing outstanding with our depth, doubles and culture."

Action began with doubles, where the Raiders opened up a quick lead in the doubles point thanks to junior Parker McGowan and first-year Tim Vargas who won 6-1 at line two. Senior captain Aidan Chung and sophomore Tim Viding won 6-3 to clinch the point for the Raiders. Sophomore Lochlan Seth and junior Jerome Falcon were up 5-4 when the point was clinched.

The Crusaders were able to even the match up with a 6-2, 6-3 over senior captain Aidan Lee at line two singles, but Vargas immediately gave the Raiders the lead back with a 6-3, 6-3 win at line four. Chung then won 6-3, 6-4 at line five, followed by Seth who won a marathon 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(6) match at line one to clinch the win for the squad. Falcon and first-year Witt Bulger were both deep in third sets when the match was called.

The Raiders return to action where they will head to Boston University for their second league match. They will take on the Terriers at 7 p.m.
