Men’s Tennis Wins 4-3 Over Lakers

SYRACUSE - Down by an overall match deficit of 3-1, the Colgate men's tennis team stormed back to beat Mercyhurst 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. The match was clinched by first-year Tim Vargas in a third set at line four.

"A gigantic, much needed W for the boys today," said Head Coach Bobby Pennington. "After a couple heartbreaking losses we bounced back today. We played an outstanding doubles point winning at one and two doubles. We were down 3-1, then Chung won a tight two setter and our freshman became men today both winning in three sets with Witt and Vargas clinching today. We showed the true DDC - doubles, depth, and culture that we've been missing. We are chomping at the bit for Lemoyne to get our record back to an even four and four with a very tough nonconference schedule. Division 1 Tennis continues in this era to get stronger and stronger and there are no easy wins, but we are a prideful and resilient group and the cream shall rise to the top."

The Raiders started off the match hot with a critical doubles point, winning at lines one and two. Senior captain Aidan Chung and sophomore Tim Viding won 6-4 at line one, and Vargas and junior Parker McGowan overcame an early deficit, down two breaks, to also win 6-4. First-year Adam Fink and senior captain John Fazli lost in a tiebreaker after the point was already clinched for the Raiders.

Singles action followed, where Mercyhurst would start out stronger. They defeated sophomore Lochan Seth 6-4, 6-4 at line one, senior captain Aidan Lee 6-3. 6-4 at line two, and McGowan 6-2, 6-2 at line six. However, the Raiders would get one back with a 6-4, 7-6(1) win by Chung at line five to keep the match alive. At line three, first-year Wittman Bulger came from behind to win 3-6, 7- 5, 6-1 in a battle where his opponent had been serving for the match in the second set. Finally, Vargas would clinch the match for the Raiders at 3-3, winning 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1 at line four.

The Raiders return to Drumlins on Friday, where they will take on Le Moyne at 2 p.m.
