HAMILTON — A late fourth-quarter goal gave Central Michigan a 3-2 win over Colgate in both team's season opener Friday at Tyler's Field.
The Chippewas pulled ahead for the first time in the game with 1:50 left in the fourth off of a goal from Pauline Klep.
Colgate outshot CMU 5-3 in the final quarter but could not find the back of the cage. The Raiders got awarded a penalty corner with a minute and eight seconds remaining that they couldn't convert.
With 16 seconds remaining in the third, Central Michigan made it a 2-2 game when Amelia Lane notched her second goal.
Chase Cmaylo put Colgate ahead 2-1 with 11:49 left in the third. The senior finished a shot off a rebound after the ball got loose in front of the goal, tallying her first career goal.
Central Michigan got awarded three straight penalty corners after time expired in the second quarter. The Chippewas finally converted on the third one when Lane scored to tie the game up at 1-1.

Lauren Widdowson, who ripped a shot into the back of the cage, tallying her first career goal.
Colgate had numerous scoring chances in the opening 15 minutes with three penalty corners and seven shots, five of which were on target.
The Raiders finished with a 20-9 advantage in shots, including an 11-4 lead in shots on goal.
Sophomore goalie
Claire van Kempen earned her first career start and made a big save at the end of the second quarter to prevent the Chippewas from scoring.

"Today's loss was a tough way to open up our season. It was a game that we need to learn from and move on. It's always exciting to get on the board first and generate a lot of attack but we need to learn how close out each quarter and control the game with possession."
