HAMILTON — Sarah Killcommons scored the overtime game-winning goal to lift Colgate past Rider 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Tyler's Field.
The Raiders' win was their first over the Broncs since 2018, defeating a tough Rider team that made the NCAA tournament last season.
Senior
Ella Murphy logged a two-point game after picking up an assist on both of the game's goals.
Killcommons' game-winner came with 5:26 remaining in the extra period. The junior received the ball off a penalty corner and passed to Murphy, who played it back to her. Killcommons then rifled a shot into the back of the cage for the victory.
Colgate's goal came after a dominating start to overtime. The Raiders drew four penalty corners in the first four and a half minutes of OT and fired five shots, three of which were on target.
First-year
Alli Troth scored the game's first goal and the first of her career to put Colgate ahead 1-0. Murphy dribbled into the arc and fired the ball toward the goal. Troth then redirected it off her stick past an outstretched Rider goalie.
Colgate held on to its initial lead until 10 and a half minutes left in the fourth when the Broncs finally tied it up. Carli Ciocco scored off a penalty corner to make it 1-1.
The Raiders generated several scoring chances in the second quarter, drawing five penalty corners. Just over three and a half minutes in, Murphy had a chance off of one of the corners when she ripped a shot, but it got saved by the goalie.
In the third, Colgate had some more good looks with shots from
Alice Walton and
Aaliyah Linfoot.
Claire van Kempen held strong in goal after giving up the early fourth-quarter goal. The sophomore denied the Broncs on three scoring chances in the final 15 minutes to keep the scoreboard even at 1-1. The victory was the first of her career.
Rachel Alderfer also had a big defensive save in the fourth, swatting the ball out of the air to stop a shot from going in.

Head Coach April Cornell-DeAngelis
"Today's win was all about the team coming together and playing for each other. We had a disappointing loss on Friday, and we talked about what we needed to do to finish the game. I'm so proud of the players for implementing what we talked about and playing with composure. Claire made some key saves that really kept us in the game. I'm really excited for her to get her first win."
