Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Ashley Hudak

Field Hockey Falls to #5 Syracuse

The Raiders 5–1 but first year Minah Cho scored her first collegiate goal

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Colgate faced ranked, neighboring opponent Syracuse. Despite the 5–1 loss, the Raiders played lockdown defense, maintaining a scoreless first quarter. Off a penalty corner, first-year Minah Cho capitalized on a redirected shot to tally a late goal in the third quarter.

COACH CORNELL-DEANGELIS' COMMENTS
"There is a lot to learn and take from a loss like this. We played tough and composed against a talented Syracuse team. We knew their corners were very dangerous and we did a great job only giving up two in the first half. It was a full team effort, every single player stepped up and was ready to go. We had an outstanding performance by our corner defense and Claire. "

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Syracuse fired off seven shots in the first quarter, placing four on target.
  • Claire van Kempen made four critical saves to keep a 0–0 scoreline.
  • Colgate's Morgan Willis took the first offensive opportunity with a shot in the 13th minute.
  • The Orange created some action and scored two goals to take a 2–0 lead into the half.
  • Syracuse fired off nine shots, scoring two to extend their lead to 4–0.
  • Colgate capitalized on fast break situations and earned two penalty corners.
  • Off the service into the arc, Ahria Dhillon played the ball into a sea of defenders. Annie Lake redirected the initial ball toward Cho, who tapped it into the back of the net to close the gap, 4-1.
  • The Orange created 12 more opportunities on target but netted only one more goal to close the game out, 5–1.
