Colgate Women Defeat Lafayette 4-2

Raiders improve to 3-1 in PL play

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Less than 24 hours after having its Senior Day spoiled by St. Bonaventure, the Colgate women's tennis team sought to rebound with a critical Patriot League win on the road. Mission accomplished. In a match moved inside due to hail, the Raiders defeated the Leopards 4-2 at the Lewis Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.

For the second consecutive day, Colgate claimed the doubles point in dramatic fashion. The Raiders recorded a win on the No. 2 court, with Emme Levenson and Rebecca Wolf taking down Jessica Siegel and Melanie Sparhawk 6-2. Lafayette picked up the win on the No. 1 court with Olivia Boeckman and Maureen McCormack sneaking by Colgate's freshman duo of Addie Eklund and Jordan Ben-Shmuel 7-5. On Court 3, Katerina Atallah and Emily Untermeyer staved off three match points en route to a thrilling 7-5 victory over Lafayette's Halle Denardo and Eleanor Campbell.

The singles action was no less intense. After dropping the No. 1 match, the Raiders put another point on the board with Ben-Shmuel's straight-set victory over Siegel at No. 3. The Leopards found themselves on the winning end of a three-setter on the No. 4 court, where Wolf fell to Sparhawk. Colgate then picked up a win at No. 2 when Levenson outlasted McCormack in three sets. Untermeyer's win on the No. 6 court clinched the match for the Raiders. Levenson and Untermeyer wrapped up the weekend a combined 8-0 in singles and doubles.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Bobby Pennington

"This was a massive win for our program. We won a marathon doubles point and Emme, Jordan and Untermeyer dug out their singles matches. We had four team goals at the start of the year: winning record (check), beat Lehigh (check), 4/5 seed in tournament (check). One big goal remains and we all know what that means."

UP NEXT
Colgate (10-8, 3-1) will close out the regular season by traveling to Army West Point on Thursday at 3 p.m. and hosting Monmouth on Friday at 5 p.m.
