Colgate Battles Lehigh in PL Quarterfinals

Raiders Take Doubles Point, but Fall to Host Mountain Hawks, 4-1, on Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fourth-seeded Colgate claimed the doubles point, but host and fifth-seeded Lehigh won the top four singles flights to post a 4-1 victory in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Patriot League Men's Tennis Championship Friday at the Lewis Tennis Center.

The Mountain Hawks pairing Colin Nardella and Ethan Bogard opened doubles play with a 6-3 win in the second doubles flight, but Colgate rallied with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches to earn the point. Jacob Daugherty and Tom Haile defeated Jeremy Kochman and Graham Lehman in the top doubles flight, 6-4, while Jake Hirschberg and Win Reynolds out-lasted Jack Peterson and George Cooper in the No. 3 doubles match, 7-5.

Petersen tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-4, 7-5 victory in the second singles flight before Kochman put Lehigh in front, 2-1, with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles.

Nardella turned in a 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles to extend the Mountain Hawks lead to 3-1 while Cooper closed out the match as he rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory in the third singles flight to give Lehigh the 4-1 victory.

"In my 10 years at Colgate this was by far the toughest loss. We won an incredible doubles point and were in the driver's seat in singles. (Jacob) Daugherty, (Bobby) Alter and (Noah) Rosenblat all lost third set battles where the match could have gone either way. Overall we had a great season with a disappointing finish. Seniors (Nick) Laub, (Mark) Pronchick and (Tom) Haile will be missed."
