Women's Tennis Splits PL Weekend

Raiders Take Down Lehigh on Sunday

Kelsey Wanhainen
HAMILTON – The Colgate women's tennis team was able to earn a split on the weekend with a 5-2 win over Lehigh after dropping Saturday's match against Bucknell at Turning Stone Resort.

Against the Mountain Hawks on Sunday, the Raiders were able to take home the doubles point to give them a lift going into singles play. Alex Petrini and Lexi Lazares edged out Taylor Hampshire and Alexandra Kaminetsky by a 9-8 score and then Jennifer Ho and Jackie Finn won in the third spot with an 8-3 victory.

Lehigh won in the first two spots in the lineup, but the Raiders earned the win by taking the final four spots. Kelsey Wanhainen made quick work of Hampshire with a straight-set win at 6-3, 6-1. Ho earned the win in the fourth position with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Kaminetsky.

Merideth Rock also won in straight sets in the fifth spot with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Emily Bruch of Lehigh. In the sixth position, Katie Grant got the start and had the most dominant performance of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

"This was a huge conference win on senior day for our ladies, especially Merideth and Jackie,” head coach Bobby Pennington said. “It was a great accomplishment to have double-digit wins and finish strong.”

On Saturday, the Raiders fell one point short of the victory with Bucknell winning, 4-3, after taking home the important doubles point. Petrini and Lazares were the lone winners for Colgate with an 8-2 win at the second spot.

The Bison then won matches in the top two spots. Kelsey Shea put up a big fight at the top spot. She fought back in the second set to tie the match with a 6-3 win and then lost 6-2 in the third set.

The Raiders were able to win in the third, fourth and fifth positions in the lineup. Wanhainen won in the third spot with a 6-1, 6-3 straight-set victory, while Rock also won in the straight sets at 6-3, 6-4. The longest match was Ho as she was a winner in three sets. She won the first set at 6-4 and after dropping the second, she fired back with an impressive 6-1 set in the third to get the win.

Next up for the Raiders is a home match against SUNY Cortland on April 15.
