HAMILTON – In their first match outside on campus, the Colgate women tennis team made quick work of Cortland State as the Raiders swept the Red Dragons, 7-0, on Monday afternoon.
The Raiders (11-5) won the doubles point handily with each pair winning their match, including a couple of 8-0 sweeps.
Kelsey Shea and
Merideth Rock earned an easy 8-1 win at the top spot, while
Alex Petrini and
Kelsey Wanhainen won without given up a point at 8-0.
Jennifer Ho and
Jackie Finn did the same in the third spot to sweep the doubles.
“Our women looked razor sharp in our first outdoor match this spring,” head coach
Bobby Pennington said. “To finish the regular season 11-5 was a good turn around from last season and that is a testament to our depth and attitude this year.”
Colgate moved their success into the singles play with three through six in the lineup winning in straight sets without giving up a game. Ho, Rock,
Katie Grant and
Olivia Rauh each took home 6-0, 6-0 wins. For Rauh, it was her first match of the spring and she played very well in the sixth position.
The top two spots put up more of a fight as Wanhainen won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, while Shea had to work hard to get her straight-set win. She went back-and-forth with Shannon Grudoteke and ended up edging the Red Dragons' top player by a 7-5 score. The next set did not resemble the first set as she finished her off with a 6-0 win.
“We're really looking forward to the Patriot League Championships,” said Pennington. “We continue to prove we are in the top half of the conference and an elite program.”
The Raiders will have a couple of weeks off before opening up the Patriot League Tournament at Army on April 26.
