HAMILTON – The Colgate men's tennis team opened its season last weekend against Buffalo and Bryant with the Raiders dropping both matches.

Colgate hosted Buffalo on Friday evening at Turning Stone Resort and the Bulls came out on top with a 7-0 win.

The Raiders dropped the doubles point with an 8-2 loss at the top spot with Nick Laub and Harry Jewett falling in the match. Bobby Berkowitz and Archer McFall competed in the second spot, while Luke Gensburg and Tom Haile were tied at 5-5 in their match when it was stopped.

In singles play, Colgate dropped each match in straight sets. Gensburg had the best showing with a 6-4, 6-4 loss.

The match against Bryant went down to the final match with Bryant winning 4-3. The Bulldogs won the all-important doubles point with wins in the second and third spots. Gensburg and Jewett teamed up for an 8-3 win.

The Raiders won singles matches in the top spot and at the fifth and sixth spots. Gensburg won his first match of the season with a 6-1, 6-3 straight-set victory. Mark Pronchick earned a win with a gritty straight-set effort. He narrowly won the first set at 7-6 and then took home the victory at 6-4 in the second. John Beam had an impressive three-set win after winning the opening set at 6-4. He then dropped the second set by a 6-0 score, but fired back to take the match with a 10-8 tiebreaker victory.

Colgate is back in action this weekend with visits to Fairfield and Hartford in Connecticut.
