Volleyball Goes Four Sets at American

Diane Seely and Kaylee Fifer teamed up for 11 kills.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Colgate women's volleyball team saw three players tally double-digit kills, but American came away with a 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-15, 25-16) win on Friday night at Bender Arena.

Colgate (14-13, 11-2 PL) has already clinched the top seed in the Patriot League Tournament next weekend. The Raiders got 11 kills from Diane Seely, while Michelle McCarthy and Lindsay Young recorded 10. Kaylee Fifer posted 36 assists and Lexi Finger had a match-high 13 digs.

The Eagles (19-9, 10-3 PL) saw Juliana Crum and Kristyna Lindovska struck for a match-high 15 kills apiece. Kylann Scheidt added 39 assists and Crum and Jessica Warner posted eight digs.

In the first set, American jumped out to a 12-7 lead with two kills from Sara Rishell and a few Colgate errors. The lead then ballooned up to 20-13. Colgate tried to come back with two kills apiece from McCarthy and Mari Faines, but the Eagles earned the first set win at 25-18.

The Raiders evened up the match with a win in the second set at 26-24. The game started out with neither team earning a significant lead, until went on a 6-1 run to make it 16-11. Colgate got kills from four different players, including Liz Karnes and Seely. The advantage got up to 19-13 on an assisted block by Fifer and Seely. The Eagles then went on an 8-2 run to tie the set at 21-21. Each team earned a one-point lead down the stretch, but back-to-back kills by McCarthy and Seely gave the Raiders the set victory.

American came out in the third set and was determined to go up 2-1 in the set and the Eagles did. They had a run of nine-straight points and won 25-15 after Colgate tried late to get back in the match. Young had two kills at the end of the set. In the fourth set, American used another late run to earn the 25-16 win to take the match at 3-1.

The Raiders will be back in action tomorrow against Navy in the final regular season match of the season. The match time is set for 2 p.m.
