Raiders Edge Eagles in Five Set Thriller

Colgate rallied in five sets to take their first Patriot League victory

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Colgate topped American in a thrilling five-set match at Bender Arena. Colgate's victory was highlighted by their strong defensive performance, recording 88 digs and 10 blocks. Both teams delivered eight service aces, but Colgate's more efficient attack, with a hitting percentage of .280, proved decisive in the close contest.

"This was an absolute battle in every way possible. Both teams showed up and put out a great product. I was very proud of our team's fight and competitiveness as the match progressed."

"Offensively we put up some huge numbers which was great to see. We were able to get some great production from some different players. Road wins are huge in this league so this was big for us. We haven't won here in a while so we needed this. Another important match tomorrow."

Set 1 (American 25, Colgate 22)
  • American took control early with a 6-0 run, highlighted by a service ace from Sophie Dufour, pushing the score to 9-3.
  • Colgate narrowed the gap to 14-10 after a service ace by Maddie Rudolph, capitalizing on American's attack errors.  
  • American maintained their lead, reaching 18-13 with effective plays from their outside hitters.  
  • Colgate rallied late, closing within 23-22, but the Eagle's kill and a final point from a bad set secured the set for American, 25-22.

Set 2 (Colgate 25, American 12)
  • The Raiders flipped the script jumping out to a 5–2 lead including a kill from Milan Bayless and Tiana Owens.
  • The Raiders commanded the second set, winning two or more points at a time from kills and Eagle's attacking errors. 
  • Frances Torres and Lal Akin combined for a pivotal block to gain an early advantage.  
  • Tiana Owens and Maddie Rudolph each recorded a service ace, helping to build Colgate's lead, 8–4.
  • Jordyn Moore helped extend the Raiders lead 17–7 off three straight kills.
  • Bayless pressed the matter, logging three kills in a row to give Colgate a 23–12 advantage. The junior also logged seven kills in set two alone. 
  • Colgate closed the period with a 5-0 run, capped by attack errors from American.  

Set 3 (American 26, Colgate 24)
  • Colgate began with a strong start, with Bayless delivering a kill for the first point, although the teams traded points early to reach a 4-4 tie.
  • American capitalized on a service ace, sparking a brief 3-0 run to take a 7-4 lead.  
  • Colgate responded with a 5-0 run, highlighted by blocks from Akin and Torres, to go ahead 9-8.  
  • American fought back with a service ace from Dufour, extending their lead to 16-14, and later capitalized on another service ace by Marrero to pull ahead 19-15.
  • Colgate narrowed the gap late with Moore tallying three consecutive kills to tie the score at 23-23.  
  • American sealed the set 26-24, with decisive kills from Salme Hollas and Elise Sterling.

Set 4 (Colgate 25, American 23)
  • Colgate opened with a 5-1 lead, fueled by a service ace from Julia Oster and a kill by Owens.  
  • Midway through the set, Rudolph delivered another kill, extending Colgate's lead to 13-9.  
  • Oster provided a crucial service ace to push the advantage to 21-16.
  • Despite a late push from American, Colgate secured the set 25-23 after an Eagle attack error.

Set 5 (Colgate 15, American 13)  
  • Colgate responded early to American's 2-0 start with a service ace from Bayless, leveling the score at 2-2.
  • Owens delivered three key kills, helping Colgate maintain a narrow lead as the set progressed.  
  • Torres and Rudolph combined for a block to put Colgate ahead 8-6, showcasing strong defensive play.  
  • The Raiders almost fell to a 10–8 deficit, but Colgate's head coach, Ryan Baker, pulled out the green card to challenge and got the call reversed for the score to be leveled at nine apiece. 
  • Bayless secured a critical kill to break a 12-12 tie, setting up Colgate's 15-13 set and match victory with a block from Rudolph.

GAME NOTES
  • Milan Bayless led the Colgate offense with 22 kills, contributing significantly to her 24 total points. Seven of her 24 kills came in the second set.
  • Ava Schabes facilitated the team's attack by distributing 28 assists and adding 17 digs.
  • Owens impressed with a .406 hitting percentage from her 14 kills, amassing 15 points overall.
  • Moore logged a career-best 12 kills, 14 points, and three blocks.
  • Oster anchored the defense, collecting a career-best 19 digs while also serving three aces.
  • Head coach Ryan Baker's fifth set challenge helped tie the match up 9–9.

UP NEXT
Colgate holds a 5-5 overall record and is 1-0 in Patriot League play. Continuing on the road, they will face Loyola Maryland in Reitz Arena on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m.
