Colgate’s Blocks Power Raiders to Victory

Colgate's defensive rallies helped secure a 3–1 win

BALTIMORE, Md. — Colgate defeated Loyola in four sets, 3–1, highlighted by eight service aces, and 13 team blocks. The Raiders were able to defeat the Greyhounds as they struggled with 33 attack errors, which contributed to their defeat in the conference match up.

COACH BAKER'S COMMENTS
"This was another good road win in what is a long and tough weekend. Loyola came out hot, but I liked how we got better throughout the match. Our serving was very good which translated into other parts."  

"I'm excited for this team to be home for a little bit. We've been on the road a lot this season and they've handled it well. I know our fans will come and rally around us."

Set 1 (Loyola 25, Colgate 22)
  • Loyola opened with a strong start, taking a quick 2–0 lead with a service ace from and a block.
  • Colgate responded with a series of exchanges, leveling the score at 5-5 after a kill by Tiana Owens and an attack error from Loyola.
  • The Raiders later built momentum with a 4–0 run, featuring a service ace from Ava Schabes, to move ahead 17–13.
  • The Greyhounds regained control with a decisive 6-0 run, including a service ace from Addie Huber, to secure the set 25–22.

Set 2 (Colgate 25, Loyola 21)
  • Loyola opened the set with a strong start, taking a 4–1 lead that included a service ace.
  • Colgate responded with a 6–0 run, highlighted by multiple attack errors from the Greyhounds, to turn a 5–2 deficit into an 8-5 advantage.
  • Milan Bayless and Frances Torres anchored Colgate's attack, both delivering key kills as the Raiders maintained an 18–14 lead.
  • A late service ace from Maddie Rudolph extended Colgate's lead to 22–17, and Bayless sealed the set with a kill for a 25–21 victory.

Set 3 (Colgate 25, Loyola 16)
  • Loyola opened the set with a 3–0 start, including consecutive kills by Lowe.
  • Colgate responded with a 4–1 run, featuring a service ace from Owens to even the score at 3–3.  
  • A 6-0 scoring streak by the Raiders, highlighted by two service aces from Bayless, propelled them to a 13–6 lead.
  • Colgate sealed the set with a 25–16 victory, capping it off with a service ace by Schabes and a block from Julia Headley and Jordyn Moore.

Set 4 (Colgate 25, Loyola 18)
  • The Raiders surged to a 4–1 lead, capitalizing on three consecutive attack errors by Loyola, including a block by Moore and Headley. 
  •  Colgate extended their lead to 8–3 with a block by Torres and Rudolph, following multiple attack errors from the Greyhounds.  
  • A service ace by Rachael Martinez pushed Colgate's advantage to 14–8, maintaining momentum in the middle of the set.
  • A 4–0 Raider run led by kills from Torres and Bayless followed by two Greyhounds attacking errors extended Colgate's lead, 18–11.
  • Bayless delivered consecutive kills to close the set 25–18 for Colgate, securing the match victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Schabes facilitated the attack with 17 assists, 13 digs, and three service aces.
  • Torres was efficient at the net, finishing with eight kills on a .467 hitting percentage and contributing five total blocks.
  • Rudolph spearheaded the defense, logging a career high of 10 blocks; nine block assists and one solo block.
  • Bayless contributed significantly to the offense, recording 14 kills and 18 points.

UP NEXT
Colgate improved to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League following their 3-1 victory over Loyola. The Raiders will bring Patriot League play to Cotterell Court for the first time of the 2025 season and face Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. followed by Bucknell on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m.
