HAMILTON – The Colgate volleyball team remained perfect in Patriot League play with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 28-26) sweep of American on Saturday and head coach
Ryan Baker earned his 100th win at Colgate.
The Raiders (9-11, 7-0 PL) had a balance attack this afternoon with
Lindsay Young leading the way with nine kills, while Liz Karnes and
Michelle McCarthy added eight strikes as well.
Kaylee Fifer finished with 29 assists, while
Caitlin Cremin had 10 digs.
The Eagles (12-8, 4-3 PL) were led by Juliana Crum with 13 kills and Teodora Peric had 16 assists. Jessica Warner recorded a team-high eight digs.
In the first set, Colgate opener up an 11-7 lead early on with two kills from
Diane Seely and ones from Young and Karnes. American fired back and tied the set at 14-14 with a service ace from Warner. The teams traded points until a Karnes kill and an American error put Colgate up 20-18. The Eagles inched closer, but another Karnes strike and an attack error by American gave the Raiders the first set at 25-23.
The momentum stayed with Colgate into the second set as the Raiders jumped out to a 7-1 lead.
Allie Dyer had an ace and Fifer added a kill during the run. The lead was increased to 18-9 as the Raiders continued to dominate. The Eagles never stood a chance in the set and Colgate earned a 25-16 win. Fifer, Karnes, Seely, and McCarthy each had two kills in the set.
American regained its fight in the third set early on as the Eagles earned a 9-5 lead. The Raiders regrouped and fired back to tie the set at 14-14 with a kill by
Mari Faines. Following the Faines strike, American dropped three-straight points on errors and Colgate had a 17-14 lead. However, the Raiders couldn't hang onto the lead and the Eagles tied the set at 19-19. Colgate did have two chances to put the match away down the stretch, but American responded and took a 26-25 lead. With the match on the line, the Raiders dug deep and with kills by McCarthy and Faines and an Eagle attack error, Colgate got the sweep with a 28-26 win in the set.
Baker becomes the second coach in Colgate history to reach 100 wins, joining Janet Little.
Colgate will continue league play will Lehigh and Lafayette next weekend, but before that the Raiders have a non-conference match at Albany on Oct. 17.
