BOSTON, Mass. (2/8/10) - The Colgate men's tennis team split their opening weekend matches with a win at Boston University, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon. The men are now 1-1 on the season while the Terriers drop to 0-3.
The Raiders claimed four of six singles matches as well as a win at second doubles to edge out Boston. Seniors
Michael Yassky (New York, N.Y.) and
John Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) both won their singles matches with Yassky downing Josh Friedman, 7-5, 6-4, at second singles and Nogueras outlasting Bill Kring in three sets, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 3 spot.
Rookies
Alec Goldstein (Bethesda, Md.) and
Harry Jewett (Centennial, Colo.) each picked up a win at fourth and sixth singles, respectively. Goldstein downed Boston's Alex Hallenbeck, 6-2, 6-2, while Jewett took out Marcus Vanberkel, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Juniors
Phil Bernasek (Fairfield, Conn.) and Ruslan Goussiantnikov (Needham, Mass.) earned the Raiders lone win at doubles. The pair defeated Bill Kring and Alex Green, 8-4 at the No. 2 doubles slot. Yassky and freshman
John Beam (Kenilworth, Ill.) were edged out at third doubles, 9-8, by the Terriers' Alex Hallenbeck and Marcus Vanberkel.
"The guys showed a tremendous amount of heart, courage, and maturity today against BU," stated head coach
Bobby Pennington. "Our captains and freshmen came up huge in the clutch."
The Raiders will be back in action this Friday, Feb. 12 when they take on regional foe Siena at 7 p.m. in Latham, N.Y.
