SYRACUSE, N.Y. (3/23/09) - The Colgate University men's tennis team shut out Lehigh, 7-0, in their first weekend of Patriot League action on Sunday.
The Raiders swept doubles play to win the first point of the day, led by duo Martin MacIntyre (Arlington, Va.) and John Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) who defeated Troy List and Collin Laffey, 8-6. The sophomore pair of Phil Bernasek (Fairfield, Conn.) and Ruslan Goussiantnikov (Needham, Mass.) downed Lehigh's Cameron Silbert and Arnaldo Pacheco, 8-4, at second doubles, while partners Michael Yassky (New York, N.Y.) and Jamie Pellechi (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) defeated Chris Collins and Edgars Rauza, 8-3, at third doubles.
Colgate shut out the Mountain Hawks in singles action as well, starting with MacIntyre at first singles defeating List, 6-3, 6-2. Nogueras downed Laffey 6-2, 6-1, at second singles while Bernasek beat Rauza 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 3 spot. At fourth singles, Yasskey defeated Collins in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0. Goussiantnikov and Sean Spellberg (Naples, Fla.) won the fifth and sixth singles, 8-5 and 8-4, respectively.
"This was a huge victory for our guys,” stated head coach Bobby Pennington. “To shut out a much improved Lehigh team, the attitude, team chemistry and play was impeccable."
The Colgate men will next host Siena this Tuesday at 3:30 in the Sanford Field House.
