Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man.) netted her second career goal in the final seconds of the third period, but the Colgate women's hockey team fell just short to Wayne State 4-3 on Friday, Oct. 23 at Starr Rink.
After a scoreless opening period, senior
Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) scored at 5:16 in the second period to put the Raiders on the board first. Rotenberg received the puck from freshman
Jenna Klynstra (Edmonton, Alta.) on the left side of the goal and cut to her right sneaking the puck past Wayne State goaltender Delayne Brian and into the right corner of the goal.
The Warriors earned their first goal of the game ten minutes later as Gina Buquet put one past Colgate's
Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) on a four-on-four play. The Raiders responded just over two minutes later at 17:58 in the period. One of Wayne State's defenders attempted to clear the puck, but instead sophomore defender
Amanda Kirwan (Mississaugua, Ont.) gained control of it and sent it toward the back of the goal, sending the Raiders into the third period with a 2-1 lead.
Wayne State entered the third period on a power-play, but the Raiders were able to kill the penalty. Just a few seconds later the Warriors tied the game with an early third period goal coming from Julie Ingratta at 1:48. Wayne State would collect two more goals over the third period coming off the sticks of Adrianna Pfeffer and Veronique Laramee-Paquette, giving the Warriors a 4-2 advantage.
The Raiders pulled Sass from goal in the final two minutes of play and the Warriors were called with two penalties, setting up a six-on-three for Colgate. With just under thirty seconds remaining in the game Phillips put in a final goal for the Raiders, assisted by senior
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) andjunior
Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.).
Sass finished the game with 25 saves, while Brian tallied 30 for Wayne State.
Colgate finished 1-7 on the power-play while the Warriors went 0-5.
Colgate (1-4) will look to split the series as it takes the ice again tomorrow on Starr Rink for game two in the series against Wayne State (1-2-2). The game is slated for 2 p.m.
