HAMILTON – No. 11/10 Colgate and No. 15 Brown played to a 3-3 tie Friday night in ECAC Hockey action at the Class of 1965 Arena. The Bears secured the extra point with a 1-0 win in the shootout.
COACH DECOSSE'S COMMENTS
"In the ECAC, it's difficult, you can't spot the opponent two goals early in the game. It's tough to claw back so kudos to our group for finding a way to tie it up to two and when they got another one, we didn't sulk. We dug in and found a way to tie that up in the third, and then that's something we're going to celebrate here. Good indication of cohesiveness coming together. So that's certainly encouraging and thought there was some other good moments throughout the game.
"As always on a Friday night, let's win the recovery battle. Let's hydrate. Let's make sure we're eating the right thing, getting to bed at the right time. It's all about progress. It's all about reflecting on our past performances and finding a way to keep moving forward and keep improving. So, we'll dig in, we'll look at the tape, and really, it's, hey, let's start on time. Puck drops. It's game time."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Brown scored all three of its goals in a wicked first period that saw five total shots find the back of the net. The Bears opened the scoring less than five minutes into the contest when Margot Norehad pocketed a rebound from in front of the net.
Norehad's second goal of the game came just over two minutes later and the visitors held a 2-0 lead. Colgate answered with two goals just over a minute apart. Elyssa Biederman cut the deficit in half on a breakaway before Alexia Aubin tied the game on a deflection in front of the net at the 16:36 mark.
Brown scored once more late in the first period to take a 3-2 lead, which it held through the entire second period after a scoreless middle term.
Colgate outshot Brown 10-5 in the second and 14-4 in the third, and the hard work finally paid off when Emma Beauchamp converted a tic-tac-toe forecheck from the far slot with assists from Alexis Petford and Chloe Goofers with 6:06 remaining.
Brooke Davis stopped the final nine shots she faced over the second and third periods, keeping the game deadlocked at 3-3 after 60 minutes of action. Neither side found the game-winner during the extra sessions, and Brown came away with the extra point with the 1-0 victory in the shootout.
