Women’s Tennis Hosts Colgate Invitational

M. Montero and Silverfield stand out with three wins each

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate women's tennis continued their fall season by hosting the annual Colgate Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. 

The Raiders competed in two days of singles and doubles hidden dual action against Williams, Hamilton, and Siena. First-year Mila Montero and sophomore Anson Silverfield led the squad with a team high of three wins a piece, while sophomore Caroline Brown and first-year Jolie Mastre both finished undefeated with two victories each.



DAY 1
The weekend began outside on Saturday morning at the J.W. Abrahamson Tennis Courts with senior-captain Carina Cristobal taking the first win for the Raiders in a 0-6 6-4 (11-9) triumph over Siena. Alongside Cristobal In the first wave of singles, senior-captain Sophia Montero and first-year Sophia Kurinets battled through three set matches ending in tiebreakers versus Siena.

Soon after, Silverfield recorded a three set win against Hamilton with the score of 3-6 7-6(5) (10-8). Simultaneously, senior-captain Paige Rothwell fought through a three set match herself against Hamilton. 

In the only doubles action of the day, the sister team of first-year M. Montero and S. Montero won against Siena with the score of 6-3, while the team of senior-captain Avery Isaac and Rebecca Hess also played a close set against Siena.

With singles action to round out the day, M. Montero recorded her first collegiate singles win with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Williams. Brown would also defeat Williams 6-3 7-5, and Mastre and Hess posted thrilling three set victories against Williams with Hess' match ending (16-14) in the final set tiebreak. To conclude Saturday's action, senior-captain Gigi Bohan recorded the final win of the day, beating Hamilton 6-1 6-4.

DAY 2
With rainy weather in the Hamilton area, action would resume on Sunday inside of Sanford Field House to conclude the invitational. The day started off with doubles action as the team of Silverfield and Isaac were victorious in two matches against Hamilton with 6-4 and 7-6(2) decisions. Following their win, both teams of S. Montero and M. Montero, as well as Mastre and Cristobal posted 6-2 wins versus teams from Williams. 

To round out the invitational, the Raiders would take on Hamilton in six singles matches. Junior Anya Kunar would win 8-6, and both Brown and Kurinets prevailed by the scores of 8-3. To finish play, sophomore Vivian Hall overcame her opponent 8-4.

The Raiders hit the courts next at the ITA Regionals Tournament at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, from Thursday, Oct. 8, through Tuesday, Oct. 13.
