WASHINGTON, D.C. - After a back-and-forth scoring battle between the two teams,
Olivia McDonald netted the game-winning goal in overtime, giving the Raiders an 11-10 win over American on Saturday.
The Raiders snapped a four-game skid and moved to 3-0 against American in Patriot League openers over the last 10 years.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Gracie DeSimone secured Colgate's first goal at 12:10 to start off the first quarter. American responded with a man-up goal to tie it up, but Ella Bishara, assisted by Charley Drouin, shot one into the back of the net at 9:24 to take back the lead. Katie Walsh earned her own goal, unassisted, at 6:14 to go.Â
The Eagles closed the gap with another free-position goal, with Kellie Linehan tying it up. Drouin found her own goal with 2:49 left in the quarter, giving the Raiders the edge. Linehan answered with another goal for American at 1:15. The first quarter came to a level end at 4-4.
Walsh netted a goal to put Colgate back in the lead at the start of the second quarter. Maddie Stevens denied five shots on goal to help the Raiders hold their lead for the first 14 minutes of the quarter. With a minute to go, Anastasia Berns tied it up for the Eagles with their fifth goal of the game. American found their first lead of the day, with three seconds to go, from a goal from Reagan Murdoch, assisted by Linehan. The Eagles took a 6-5 lead by the end of the first half.Â
American extended their lead to seven goals against Colgate's five with 13:34 left in the third quarter. Bishara found the netting to end the Eagle's scoring run at 11:30. Aubrey McMahon rifled one in at 7:05, and evened the score back up for the Raiders. Murdoch scored another goal for the Eagles, giving them an 8-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Eagles placed a shot in the net, opening the scoring gap to a two-goal lead, but McMahon answered with her own unassisted goal at 7:05 to go. 90 seconds later, she then went on to earn her third goal of the game to even out the scoreboard for Colgate. Bishara finished over the shoulder of the Eagle's Brooke Hill at 3:16 to put the Raiders back in the lead for the first time since the second quarter. With five seconds to go, Linehan scored for American and forced overtime, ending regulation time with a score of 10-10.
With a free-position attempt 50 seconds into overtime, Olivia McDonald fired one in and secured the Raiders' first conference win of the season.
GAME NOTES
- Bishara and McMahon led the team in points with three goals apiece.
- Ella Bishara earned her second hat trick of the season, tying Katie Walsh for third-leading goal-scorer (10g) of the season.
- Aubrey McMahon found her fifth hat trick of the season, extending her hat trick streak to three games.
