STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Raiders dropped their opener of the road trip 4-0 to Wagner on Friday afternoon.
WAGNER 4 - COLGATE 0
"A very tough weekend overall for the boys with brutal results Wagner I thought we came out extremely flat and lost the double point," said head coach
Bobby Pennington. "We didn't really have a chance for four or five and six to get out there as they had a very very strong top three and showed why they were 7 to 2 on the season. We learned a valuable lesson from that match as we just did not come out ready to play."
The Seahawks would start off strong in the doubles, taking court two 6-2 over the freshmen duo of Tim Vargas and Wittman Bulger. They would clinch the point with a 6-4 win over the sophomore duo of Lochlan Seth and Wesley Nichols. Nichols made his dual match debut in the loss. Senior captain Aidan Chung and sophomore Tim Viding were up 5-3 when the point was clinched.
Wagner continued their success on the singles court, where they would double their lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over junior Jerome Falcon on court three. The Seahawks would then take a 6-2, 7-6(4) win over Seth at line one, before clinching the match 6-4, 6-4 over senior captain Aidan Lee at line three.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The squad would fall to Villanova 4-2 in a heartbreaker to cap off their road trip.
VILLANOVA 4 - COLGATE 2
"Villanova was a completely different story as we had the match on our rackets to win against the very strong big east team and let it slip away," said Pennington. We came out flat and the doubles but were so strong in the singles with Lochlan and Lee both beating high-quality players that wanted to in straight sets. We needed two more points and Vargas was one game away from winning before it was decided for the third point and we lost a heartbreaker in three sets and three singles while Jerome and Chung lost in straight sets. We have to learn how to play a complete match and get mentally and physically tougher to beat these strong opponents as we are coming up just a hair short."
Villanova started off the match strong in doubles, winning all three courts. They started out with a 6-1 win over Chung and Viding, and clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Bulger and Vargas. Lee and junior Parker Mcgowan also lost 6-3.
The Raiders responded very well after the doubles point loss, with Seth taking court one 6-3, 6-2. Shortly after, Lee picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win at line two to give Colgate a 2-1 lead. Villanova would tie the match with a 6-7(8) 6-4, 6-3 win over Bulger at line three. The Wildcats would quickly add onto their lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Falcon at line four, and clinch the match 6-4, 6-3 over Chung at line six. Vargas was up 5-7, 6-2, 5-3 when play was called.
The Raiders return to Drumlins on Sunday, where they will take on Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.
