Colgate takes down St. Francis to finish weekend 1-1

Box Score 1 PENNSYLVANIA - After falling in their season opener by a tight 4-3 decision to Duquesne on Friday, the Raiders flipped the script with a hard-fought 4-3 win over St. Francis on Saturday.

COLGATE 3 - 4 DUQUESNE
Senior captains Aidan Lee and Aidan Chung picked up singles wins, as well as first-year Tim Vargas to account for the Raiders's three points.

"A very tough, hard fought, chippy battle for our boys today against a very talented Duquesne team" said head coach Bobby Pennington. "We came up a bit slow in doubles before we got our footing, but credit to Parker and Jerome for winning.  Singles was a marathon battle splitting down the middle. Lochlan and Jerome had tough days playing two high quality opponents. Credit to our depth of Vargas and Chung winning at 5 and 6. Lee played incredibly well, wiping their 2 in straight sets. Witt Bulger lost a marathon in three sets. We are going to have a ton of matches like this and need a strong bounce back tomorrow."

Action began with doubles competition, where the Dukes started out hot winning 6-1 on court one against the first-year duo of Vargas and Witt Bulger. The Raiders countered with a strong performance at line three from the junior duo of Parker McGowan and Jerome Falcon, who picked up on their successful campaign last season. The point came down to Chung and sophomore Tim Viding, who fell 6-4 at line two.

Singles action followed, where the Dukes picked up another point with a win over Falcon at line three. Sophomore Lochlan Seth also fell at line one for Duquesne to be one point away from victory. However, the Raiders were not dead yet, as Lee picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win at line two to pick up their first point. The Dukes would clinch the match with a win over Bulger at line five 6-0. 6-7 (3), 6-1. Colgate would finish strong, with Vargas winning 6-3, 6-3 at line five, and Chung winning 2-6, 6-2, (10-7) at line six.

COLGATE 4 - 3 ST. FRANCIS
The Colgate men's tennis team picked up a come from behind victory on Saturday night, as they defeated St. Francis 4-3 for their first win of the season. Senior Aidan Chung clinched the match at 3-3 for the Raiders with a critical third set victory.

"What a marathon win for the boys today," said head coach Bobby Pennington. "We have lost the past couple matches to St Francis and the revenge felt sweet. We lost the doubles point and had three warriors come up clutch today winning in three sets, Lochlan at 1, Jerome at 3, and Chung clinching at 5. Credit to Vargas for a 2 and 0 weekend. We are a thin hair from being 2 and 0 going into Siena. We are a young, hungry group of dawgs."

St. Francis began the match with the upper-hand, taking the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Chung and sophomore Tim Viding picked up a 6-4 win at line two.

Singles action followed, where the Red Flash added onto their lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win over senior captain Aidan Lee at line two. However, the Raiders would respond with two third set victories by sophomore Lochlan Seth who won 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, and junior Jerome Falcon, by a score of 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3. With the match tied at two all, St. Francis picked up a pivotal 6-3, 6-4 win over first-year Wittman Bulger at line four. However, the Raiders would swing the momentum back with first-year Tim Vargas winning 6-3, 6-4 at line five. It all came down to court six, where Chung was leading 3-6, 6-4, 3-0 when his opponent retired, giving Colgate the win.
