Raiders Earn 3–1 Victory Over the Mids

After dropping the first set, Colgate picked up the next three to prevail

Box Score ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Colgate defeated Navy 3–1 on Friday at Wesley A. Brown Field House. After dropping the first set 14–25, the Raiders rallied to win the next three sets 25–22, 25–16, 25–19. The Raiders recorded several multiple point runs late in the last three sets to prevail over the Mids.

COACH BAKER'S COMMENTS
"Credit to Navy for a very strong start.  They had us on our heels for a while, but we were able to make some good adjustments.  Winning on the road is very tough and it doesn't get any easier tomorrow.  We need to get ready for another battle."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (Navy 25, Colgate 14)
  • Colgate opened the first set with an early kill from Tiana Owens, assisted by Ava Schabes, leveling the score at 1–1. 
  • The team showed resilience, responding to Navy's early lead with contributions from Maddie Rudolph and Frances Torres, keeping the score tight at 8–8. 
  • As the set progressed, Colgate managed to tie the score at 12–12 with a kill by Milan Bayless, assisted by Julia Oster
  • Navy surged ahead with a series of successful plays, including multiple kills and service aces, extending their lead 21–13.
  • Colgate's attempts to close the gap were hindered by a series of errors, and the set concluded with Navy taking the set 25–14.
Set 2 (Colgate 25, Navy 22)
  • In the second set, Navy capitalized on their offensive success to take a quick 6–2 lead. 
  • Colgate responded with key blocks by Maddie Rudolph and Frances Torres, cutting the deficit to 12–8. 
  • The momentum shifted as Colgate tied the score at 15-15, following a series of defensive stops and effective kills from Lal Akin.
  • A service ace by Deren Cukur extended the lead 22–19
  • Colgate maintained composure to secure the set 25–22, closing out with a decisive kill from Owens off an assist from Rachael Martinez.
Set 3 (Colgate 25, Navy 16)
  • The score was kept tight early on as kills from Bayless, Torres, and Jordyn Moore helped Colgate take a 6–4 advantage. 
  • After an initial exchange of points, Colgate leveled the score at eights after Rudolph tallied her fifth kill on the match.
  • Colgate's defense held firm, with Rudolph and Torres combining for a block to level the score at 11–11. 
  • The team then embarked on a decisive run, highlighted by multiple kills from Bayless and back-to-back service aces from Oster, extending the lead to 22–15.
  • Colgate maintained their advantage, closing the set with a kill from Rudolph to secure a 25–16 victory. Winning this set allowed Colgate to pull ahead in the match 2–1.
Set 4 (Colgate 25, Navy 20)
  • Colgate capitalized on early momentum in the fourth set, with Bayless and Rudolph delivering key offensive plays to establish a narrow 5–3 lead.
  • Despite a brief rally from Navy, Colgate maintained control, with Cukur orchestrating the attack effectively as the Raiders pulled ahead 10–7.
  • The Mids established a four point run to take their third lead of the set, 11–10.
  • Colgate's defense, led by Bayless and Rudolph, thwarted Navy's attempts to close the gap, allowing Colgate to extend their lead to 17-14. 
  • Owens and Torres contributed crucial kills, pushing the score to 20-15.
  • The Raiders closed the set with Moore securing the final point, sealing a 25-19 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Bayless and Owens led the team with 14 kills apiece. Bayless led the team with 15 points, recording 14 kills while also contributing five digs. Owens matched Bayless with 15 points, adding 14 kills and six digs to her performance. 
  • Schabes facilitated the offense with 23 assists and added 10 digs to her stat line.
  • Rudolph was effective at the net, finishing with nine kills and four total blocks.

Colgate improved its record to 12-5 overall and remained undefeated at 7-0 in Patriot League play. The Raiders will face Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. for a 4 p.m. showdown on Lee-Turner Arena at Grace Hall
