Colgate Tops Lehigh in 3–0 Sweep

Colgate rallied for their longest set, 34–32 to go on and win 3–0

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Colgate edged Lehigh in a first set 34–32 thriller, to go on and win the next two sets 25–20 and 25–14 to sweep the Mountain Hawks 3–0. 

This victory marks Colgate's 11th consecutive win, maintaining their status as the only team undefeated in conference play with an 8-0 record.

"This was a great back and forth match against two physical teams.  I loved our competitiveness from start to finish and to put that together on the road is impressive.  I'm thoroughly enjoying watching this team figure out a little more about themselves each week."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (Colgate 34, Lehigh 32)
  • The first set of the match between Colgate and Lehigh saw both teams trading points early on, maintaining a tight contest.
  • Colgate had a breakout moment midway through the set, capitalizing on two Mountain Hawk attacking errors and kills from Milan Bayless and Jordyn Moore to take a 15–11 advantage. 
  • Lehigh evened the score at 19 apiece, but the Raiders rallied to 24–21 to earn a set point advantage.
  • Lehigh earned four unanswered points to take a 25–24 lead and put themself one point away from claiming the first set. 
  • As the set progressed, Bayless continued to be a key factor, delivering several important points, including a late kill to break a 28–28 tie. 
  • Colgate broke through in the final moments when Tiana Owens sealed the set with a kill, giving the Raiders a 34–32 victory in a hard-fought first set, marking their longest rally of the season.
Set 2 (Colgate 25, Lehigh 20)
  • Colgate seized momentum early, overcoming a brief Lehigh lead with a series of plays. 
  • After falling behind 2–0, the Raiders tied it up with kills from Moore and Bayless, followed by a service ace to take a 3–2 advantage. 
  • The teams exchanged points, but Colgate capitalized on Lehigh's service errors and contributions from Bayless and Owens to build a 5–3 lead.
  • Lehigh managed to level the score at 8–8 following back-to-back service aces. 
  • Colgate responded with a critical block from Lal Akin and Owens, regaining the lead at 11–9. 
  • Bayless and Owens delivered key kills to extend the lead to 19–15.
  • Owens stayed hot, securing multiple kills to widen Colgate's advantage to 22–16. 
  • Despite Lehigh's late push, which closed the gap to 22–20, Colgate finished strong with Frances Torres and Owens delivering the last three kills to finish set two 25-20.
Set 3 (Colgate 25, Lehigh 14)
  • After a service error by Lehigh, the Raiders gained momentum with kills from Torres and Maddie Rudolph to lead 7–5. 
  • Key kills from Bayless and Owens extended Colgate's lead to 13–8.
  • Colgate continued to build on their advantage with a strong blocking performance from Rudolph, who extended their lead to 18-10. 
  • Colgate maintained control, with consistent scoring from Bayless and Torres, closing the set with a 25–14 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Bayless led the Colgate offense with 18 kills and five total blocks, contributing significantly to her team's overall 20.5 points. 
  • Owens followed closely with 15 kills and added one ace, finishing with 17.0 points. 
  • Ava Schabes led the attack with 18 assists over three sets. 
  • Rudolph recorded eight total blocks, including one solo, to bolster the team's defensive efforts.

UP NEXT
Colgate holds a 13–5 overall record and a perfect 8–0 record in the Patriot League. They will return back to Hamilton to compete against UAlbany on Tuesday and host kids day on Cotterell Court.
