HAMILTON — Lily Schoonmaker scored in the fourth quarter but the Raiders fell 5-1 to Rider in their season opener Friday afternoon at Tyler's Field.
Claire van Kempen made a career-best 16 saves in goal, including 13 stops in the second half.
The Broncs opened the scoring at the 13:02 mark when Katie Wuerstle found the back of the cage off a pass from Semra Said.
Rider doubled its advantage with 4:22 left in the second after Olivia Machiavelli ripped a shot that got saved but she followed her rebound and finished it home. The visitors then made it a three-goal game four minutes later thanks to a tally from Amanda Walker. Rider put another in four minutes into the fourth.
Schoonmaker got the Raiders on the board with 4:23 left in the fourth to make it 4-1. Following a penalty corner, Alice Walton played a pass to Schoonmaker, and she ripped it past the goalie.
The Broncos scored one more in the fourth to secure the 5-1 victory.
Colgate held Rider scoreless in the third, thanks to eight saves from van Kempen and a strong defensive effort, fending off eight penalty corners.
The Raiders earned their first corner just over two minutes into the second. Grace Schmelzinger fired a shot, but it went wide. Colgate had one shot in the opening quarter at the 5:07 mark when Hannah Marcotrigiano ripped one from right in front of the goal that the keeper stopped with her body.
van Kempen made three saves in the first half, denying the Broncs on some early chances.
