HAMILTON — Colgate fell 5-0 to No. 14 Ohio State Friday afternoon at Tyler's Field.
"I was really proud of our team for competing hard and staying very disciplined against a powerful Ohio State team. We stuck to our passing game plan and our defense handled their high-pressure press exceptionally well," said head coach
April Cornell-DeAngelis.
"We had our chances to get on the board and unfortunately didn't find the back of the net. We will take what we learned into our game on Sunday to get some early goals and finish on top."
The Buckeyes scored quick back-to-back goals in the second to build their lead. Brenna Bough recorded the first off a pass from Makenna Webster at the 13:24 mark. Less than a minute later, Zella Bailey made it 2-0.
Ohio State extended its advantage to three with under 10 minutes left after Hallie Brost found the back of the cage.
Hannah Marcotrigiano had a good look at goal with 8:09 left in the second, but it got stopped by the goalie.
Just under three minutes into the third, the Raiders earned their first corner that they could not convert.
Grace Schmelzinger also had an opportunity three minutes later when she ripped a shot that got stopped on a defensive save.
Lauren Widdowson had Colgate's best chance of the game with 1:15 left in the third. The sophomore had an open look at the goal, but her shot got stopped by a beautiful foot save by the Buckeyes' goalie. In the fourth, Tyler Argliagos fired a shot that landed off target.
Ohio State added a goal in each of the final two quarters, with Sienna Golden and Cameryn Forgash both getting on the scoresheet.
Claire van Kempen stopped three shots in the first quarter to keep the Buckeyes off the scoreboard. She finished with six saves in the game.
