Colgate Prevails in Shootout Over La Salle

The Raiders secure a 4-2 shootout victory

HAMILTON – In Colgate's first overtime thriller of the season, the Raiders rallied against La Salle on Tyler's Field to win in a shootout, 3-2 (SO, 4-2).

Two late goals from Morgan Willis helped Colgate erase a two-goal deficit and force overtime. Kennedy Glinn and Marissa Buck split time in goal throughout the game. Glinn played the first round of overtime, while Buck stepped in as the designated goalkeeper for the shootout. Both goalkeepers made significant contributions to the Raiders' win.



MOMENTS OF THE MATCH
  • The first quarter was slow as both teams adjusted to each other's styles of play.
  • Only two shots were taken, one by each team, with both goalkeepers making saves to keep the score 0-0 after the first quarter.
  • Colgate outshot La Salle 7-0 in the second quarter, generating several offensive opportunities. Willis fired five shots, while Ava Poliafico and Caroline Rotteveel each added one.
  • Both teams entered halftime scoreless.
  • Early in the third quarter, the Explorers capitalized on two penalty corners, converting in the 36th and 38th minutes to take a quick 2-0 lead.
  • The Raiders were undeterred. Two minutes later, Olivia Milia delivered a pass to Willis, who found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • Colgate continued to pressure La Salle in the fourth quarter, earning seven penalty corners to the Explorers' one.
  • On the Raiders' fifth attempt, Lauren Widdowson inserted the ball to Aiden Cronk, who laid it off to Willis. Willis scored her second goal of the game to tie the match at 2-2.
  • Buck made two key saves in the fourth quarter to keep La Salle from regaining the lead.
  • As time expired, both teams prepared for 15 minutes of overtime. Glinn returned to goal for Colgate and made a key save in the 73rd minute to keep the Raiders in the game.
  • Colgate fired three shots in overtime, with one from Willis saved.
  • Overtime ended scoreless, sending the game to a shootout. Buck was assigned as Colgate's designated goalkeeper. The Raiders' lineup consisted of Milia, Elicia Bikhazi-Green, Widdowson, Rotteveel and Kyleigh Welusz.
  • Milia took Colgate's first attempt, but La Salle's goalkeeper made the save. Buck then came off her line and made a big save to give Colgate a 1-0 advantage.
  • Bikhazi-Green's shot went slightly wide, but Buck made another save to keep the Raiders in front, 1-0.
  • Widdowson converted her attempt, and La Salle responded with a goal to make it 2-1.
  • Rotteveel converted her attempt, and the Explorers answered with another goal to make it 3-2.
  • Welusz provided the decisive answer for Colgate, scoring the game-winning shootout goal to lift the Raiders to a 4-2 shootout victory.
NOTES
  • For the first time in program history, the Raiders faced La Salle and prevailed in thrilling fashion, 3-2 (SO, 4-2).
  • Willis recorded 14 shots, putting nine on target, including two goals. She has scored two goals in each of the last three games she has played in.
  • Willis leads the league in shots (38), shots on goal (27), goals (6) and points (14).

The Raiders will travel to Pennsylvania for their first road trip of the season to face Lock Haven on Friday at 5 p.m.
