HAMILTON — A strong fourth quarter was not enough for Colgate as it fell 14-10 to Harvard Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium in its final nonconference game.
The Raiders outscored the Crimson 6-4 in the final 15 minutes of action, but their comeback effort ran out of time.
Adam Salvaggio led the way for Colgate, notching four points with two goals and two assists. Additionally,
Alex Pistorius and
Rory Connor each recorded two goals and an assist.
The Raiders netted the game's first tally at the 13:23 mark when Salvaggio put one in. After a pair of Crimson goals, Colgate drew even when
Charlie Lohman scored his first career goal. The freshman ripped one in off a pass from Pistorius to make it 2-2.
Harvard scored four more in the opening quarter to take a 5-2 lead. The Crimson extended its streak to six with another two early in the second.
Pistorius halted the scoring run when he scored with 7:01 remaining in the second to cut the lead to four at 7-3. Harvard ended the first half with two man-up goals to grab a 9-3 advantage going into the break.
Neither side found the back of the net at the start of the second half. Harvard finally broke the third-quarter stalemate with a goal from Joe Dowling at the 4:15 mark. Less than a minute later, Colgate responded when Connor put one in to make it 10-4.
The Crimson scored an early fourth-quarter goal, but Colgate answered with three straight of its own, starting with
Hunter Drouin netting his second of the season at the 9:06 mark. With 5:32 remaining, Connor notched his second of the game off a pass from Salvaggio.
Thomas Colucci won the faceoff following Connor's goal and took it the length of the field before ripping a shot in to make it 11-7. The senior went 10-of-14 from the "x" and scooped up a team-high eight ground balls.
Harvard scored two more before the Raiders responded with another three in a row. With 2:52 remaining,
Colin Ruppenstein scored, and Pistorius followed that with his second of the contest 45 seconds later. Salvaggio then logged a goal to cut the lead to three at 13-10. The Crimson then put in one more to secure the win.
Goalie
Matt LaCombe made 10 saves in the net for the Raiders.

Head Coach Matt Karweck
"We have so many instances where we turn it up, and look so sharp, dangerous, and aggressive. The issue we are having is that we also have these major lapses that put us in deep holes early in the game. You have to love our fight, you have to love our attitude and determination when our backs are against the wall, and you have to love that we NEVER GIVE UP. I love that about this team. I need to find a way to harness that energy and determination earlier in the game. If we do that, outwork our opponents on ground balls, and execute at the end of plays, we can make a serious run here at the back half of our season. We are looking forward to the challenge."
