HAMILTON — Colgate held the lead at the end of the first three quarters but fell 10-9 to No. 7 Army in a back-and-forth battle Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium. The Raiders honored their 11 seniors before the game.
Sophomore goalie
Matt LaCombe had a standout performance despite the loss, recording 14 saves, which included several highlight reel stops. He made five saves in the second quarter and topped that with six in the fourth.
Other leaders for the Raiders included
Thomas Colucci,
Michael Minicus, and
Hunter Drouin, who each netted two goals.
Army scored a pair of man-up goals in the final five minutes and 45 seconds before holding on for the victory. The game previously got tied up at 8-8 after Drouin netted his second of the contest with 6:46 remaining.
Colgate took a 6-4 lead early in the third with a goal from
Adam Salvaggio at the 13:58 mark. Army scored three in a row before Colucci notched his second of the game off a faceoff win to halt the scoring run and make it 7-7.
Jack Turner then notched a goal to put his team back ahead 8-7 with just over a minute left.
The Raiders outscored the Black Knights 3-2 in the second quarter. Less than a minute in,
Colin Ruppenstein made the score 4-2 when he fired one in. Minicus then found the back of the net for the second time in the game with 7:38 remaining to give Colgate a three-goal cushion at 5-3. The Black Knights ended the first half with a pair of goals, but the Raiders still held a one-goal advantage at the halftime break.
After Army got on the board in the first quarter, Colgate answered with three straight to take a two-goal lead. Minicus diced up a defender and fired a diving shot to score the Raiders' first tally. Colucci won the faceoff directly after and took it the length of the field before putting a shot in the net. Five minutes later, Drouin ripped one past the goalie to put the scoreboard at 3-1.
Colgate fired 31 shots in the game, 19 of which were on goal.
