ITHACA, N.Y. — Colgate scored in each of the final three quarters, but a strong offensive performance by Cornell led the Big Red to a 12-4 victory Tuesday afternoon.
Ella Murphy put together a four-point performance with a goal and two assists. It marks her fifth straight game with a point and her fifth multi-point game.
After falling behind 3-0 in the first, the Raiders scored twice in the second to make it a one-goal game. Colgate got awarded a penalty stroke just over a minute into the quarter. Murphy took the penalty shot and fired it past Cornell's goalie.
Just over two minutes later, the Raiders struck again. The ball got loose in front of the goal, and a Cornell clear attempt got picked up by
Alice Walton, who took advantage of the Big Red's goalie being out and ripped a shot into the back of the cage.
Dani Palmer notched her third goal of the season in the third. Murphy dribbled to the baseline before playing a short pass in front of the cage that Palmer tapped in. First-year
Morgan Willis notched her first career goal in the fourth off an assist from Murphy following a corner.
Cornell got a hot start, scoring three unanswered in the first. The Big Red notched two more in the second, taking a 5-2 advantage into the break. In the second half, Cornell continued its offensive surge, tallying four goals in the third and three in the fourth.
The Raiders created other scoring chances throughout the game. Colgate earned a corner in both of the first two periods, but it could not capitalize. The team had another in the fourth and finished with five in the game.
Ahria Dhillon had an opportunity with 13:42 remaining in the second when she fired one that got knocked off the line in a defensive save by a Big Red player.
Grace Schmelzinger had a good look when she took a shot just under six minutes into the game that got stopped by the goalie.
The Raiders finished with eight shots, six of which were on goal.
