Colgate Secures First Shutout Over Mercyhurst

The Raiders acquired their first shutout of the season in a 3–0 victory.

HAMILTON, N.Y. — Colgate secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Mercyhurst on Sunday. The Raiders' defense was impenetrable, allowing only four shots from the Lakers, with Colgate's goalie, Claire Van Kempen, recording two saves for the shutout. Colgate dominated the offensive stats, registering 23 total shots, 12 of which were on goal.

COACH CORNELL-DEANGELIS' COMMENTS
"We were really focused on making sure we got the shutout and had solid team defense. I've been preaching that defense wins championships. I'm really happy that the team focused on making sure they didn't give up a lot of shots."

"We didn't give up a lot of defensive penalty corners and had the shutouts. It's just really exciting to see us create so many scoring opportunities. We want to focus on how we can execute better in those moments inside the circle, but we had a wide variety of shots."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst earned a penalty corner in the third minute, but the Lakers' shot was saved by Colgate's Claire Van Kempen.
  • Colgate responded with a series of penalty corners beginning in the 11th minute, resulting in shots by Ahria Dhillon, Willis, and Grace Schmelzinger, all of which were saved by Mercyhurst goalie Louise Pert.
  • Van Kempen made a crucial save on Ava Jones's shot to maintain the scoreless tie in the first quarter.
  • Colgate took the 1–0 lead in the 17th minute when Widdowson scored her second goal of the season, assisted by Lochhead, converting a penalty corner opportunity.
  • Willis doubled the lead in the 20th minute with her seventh goal of the season, assisted by Widdowson, capitalizing on a continued offensive push.
  • Colgate extended its lead to 3-0 as Dani Palmer scored in the 32nd minute off a solo effort.
  • Colgate maintained offensive pressure with multiple shots on goal, including a blocked attempt by Hannah Marcotrigiano.
