Women’s Tennis Wins on the Road

A 4-3 defeat of Wagner sends Raiders into offseason on high note

Box Score FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Colgate women's tennis ended their fall season on a high note, defeating Wagner, 4-3, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

"I'm really proud of the women for beating a much improved Wagner squad," Head Coach Bobby Pennington said. "The women have so much talent and are so young with no seniors on the roster. They need to continue to get good reps and they will be lethal in the spring. We had a fantastic fall season and look forward to our offseason."

The Raiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Sunday afternoon after comfortably capturing the doubles point. The duo of first-year Carina Cristobal and sophomore Amelia Galin dropped a 7-5 decision in the first flight, but Sophia Montero/Gigi Bohan and Eliza Podlas/Avery Isaac won both of their doubles bouts, 6-1.

In singles play, Galin and Montero fell in singles one and two, respectively, but Cristobal handedly swept singles three, 6-0, 6-0. After junior Jordan Ben-Shmuel narrowly fell in her individual matchup, the Raiders were facing a 3-2 deficit with two matches to play.

On the fifth singles court, Bohan played through the pressure after finding herself down 3-2 early in the first set. However, the first-year successfully rallied to win her matchup and knot up the duel at three.

With the fate of the duel on her shoulders, Herman came from behind and won her match in two sets, 6-3, 6-3, to clinch the road win for the Raiders.
