APALACHIN, N.Y. – Top five individual finishes by
Robbie Herzig and
Dugan McCabe helped Colgate claim second place at Binghamton's Matthews Auto Collegiate Invite on Monday.
Herzig fired a 3-under 69 in Monday's final round to jump seven spots and finish second overall with a 70-69-139 (-5) composite score. Mount St. Mary's Devin Smith ran away with medalist honors behind a 68-65-133 (-11) two-round performance. Herzig's two-round total of 139 is the fifth-lowest two-round score of all time, second all-time in relation to par behind McCabe's performance at Cornell earlier this year.
Colgate's 286-284-570 (-6) was good enough for second, only behind Mount St. Mary's which tied the tournament record with a 284-278-562 (-14) team tally. The Raiders' 570 composite marks the lowest 36-hole total in relation to par in school history by eight shots (previous best was +2) and ties the lowest numerical two-round total not in relation to par.
Three birdies on the back nine pulled Herzig into second place. McCabe carded an even-par 72 on Monday, holding on to his 3-under score from Sunday to finish tied for fourth at 69-72-141. McCabe's performance landed him his third top five finish of the season.
Justin Fedele checked in at 17th with an even-par 73-71-144 composite. Fedele moved up two spots on Monday after two birdies on the back nine carried him to a 1-under 71 in the final round.
Michael Hanratty was not far behind in 23rd after finishing the two-day tournament with a 74-72-146 (+2) composite score.

Head Coach Keith Tyburski
""I'm really proud of our guys for their performance this weekend. Each round started off with some adversity, and to see them battle through and get back to red numbers was a testament to their grit and determination. While winning is the ultimate goal, a second-place finish in this capacity is certainly something we are proud of. Kudos to Mount St. Mary's for how they played this week, they certainly deserved it. Robbie's hard work and resiliency paid off this week. He started out with bogeys early on each round, and then made a lot of birdies on each of his second 9's to finish strong. He has a tremendous amount of talent, and when he gets things dialed in it's fun to watch."
