Raiders Split Opening Day in North Carolina

Rounsavill Drives in Seven, Misken Dazzles in First Career Start

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Freshman Bailey Misken pitched a complete game shutout in her first collegiate start to lead Colgate to a 4-0 victory over Gardner-Webb in the nightcap and a doubleheader split after the Raiders fell to Robert Morris 6-4 in the opener on Friday.

Misken fired seven shutout innings in her first career start, scattering eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts to earn the win over Gardner-Webb. Nicole Rounsavill picked up where she left off from last year's All-Patriot League season, clubbing a grand slam and finishing with seven RBIs in the two games.

Freshman Rachel Carney started both games and finished with three hits and two runs scored. Fellow freshman Steph Jacoby was strong in her debut, posting two hits in five at-bats.

Game 1: Robert Morris 6, Colgate 4
Rounsavill opened the season with fireworks in the top of the first. The senior smashed a grand slam to give Colgate an early four-run cushion. Carney singled before back-to-back walks by Virginia Irby and Morgan Farrah set the stage for Rousavill's first homer of the year.

Robert Morris (4-2) pitcher Madison Riggle settled in from there and finished her complete game with six scoreless frames after the shaky first. After a couple singles by Christiana Cottrell and Carney in the top of the second, Colgate's bats went silent and Riggle did not allow another hit the rest of the way.

The Colonials chipped away with a run in the second inning and two more in the third before a two-run triple by Alaina York capped a three-run sixth to give Robert Morris a 6-4 advantage.

Irby worked a two-out walk in the top of the seventh, but she was stranded there and Robert Morris held on to score the game's final six runs in a 6-4 victory.

Game 2: Colgate 4, Gardner-Webb 0
The nightcap was a pitchers' duel for five innings, with neither team able to scratch a run across. Irby and Farrah changed that in a hurry behind back-to-back doubles in the top of the sixth. Rounsavill drove in Farrah one batter later to double Colgate's lead to 2-0.

Colgate (1-1) went back to work in the top of the seventh, adding two insurance runs on the strength of three hits to back Misken in the circle. Rebecca Johnson and Carney both singled before Rounsavill cranked a two-run double to push Colgate's lead to 4-0.

Misken recorded a strikeout in each of her first four innings. She escaped a jam in the fifth, coming back from three straight two-out singles to induce a flyout and strand the bases loaded. Misken worked around a double in the sixth and fanned her sixth and final batter in a scoreless seventh to cap the shutout.

 QUOTES
Colgate Head Coach Marissa Lamison-Myers
On the games:
"Nicole Rounsavill showed up to play today. Seven RBIs with a grand slam and a huge defensive play in the second game that kept us in the game was key. Her maturity and lead by example attitude was just what we needed after a disappointing Game 1.

"Bailey Misken was absolutely dialed in tonight. Her ability to stay calm and work out of a few jams in her first career start was uplifting. She kept her offense in the game and gave them a chance to do what they do best."
