Misken Dazzles in Doubleheader Split

Complete Game Shutout Carries Colgate Past Robert Morris

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Bailey Misken dominated in the circle once again with her second consecutive complete game shutout and Colgate salvaged a doubleheader split Saturday at Gardner-Webb. The Raiders fell to Valparaiso 2-1 in Game 1 before bouncing back to defeat Robert Morris 3-0 in the nightcap.

Misken is off to quite the start for the Raiders, firing 14 straight scoreless innings with 18 strikeouts in back-to-back shutouts. Steph Jacoby paced Colgate's offense in the doubleheader with two hits and two RBIs. Nicole Rounsavill homered for the second time in as many days, and Mia Guevarra added two hits, including a double.

Game 1: Valparaiso 2, Colgate 1
Valparaiso (5-4) struck first in the bottom of the third on a home run by Jaina Westpal and the Crusaders added another in the fourth. Jess Hay relieved Bella Crow in the circle and worked out of a jam with a strikeout and a popout stranding a runner in scoring position in the fourth.

Colgate trimmed the deficit in half in the top of the fifth. Jacoby reached on an infield error and advanced to second before Guevarra drilled an RBI double one batter later. That would be Colgate's only scoring in the opening game. The Raiders had a runner reach base in each of the last two innings, but could not scratch the tying run across in the 2-1 final.

Hay was strong in relief, allowing one hit over 2 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. Crow shouldered the loss after allowing two earned runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. Guevarra's fifth-inning double was Colgate's lone hit in the defeat.

Game 2: Colgate 3, Robert Morris 0
Jacoby provided the only runs Colgate needed in the bottom of the second of Game 2. Back-to-back singles by Guevarra and Morgan Farrah set up Jacoby for a two-run double in the gap. Rounsavill bashed her second homer of the season in the fourth to extend the Raiders' lead to 3-0.

Misken's only stressful inning came in the top of the fourth. Madison Riggle singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next batter worked a walk, but Misken worked out of trouble with an inning-ending groundout to second base to strand two runners on.

Misken put a stamp on her shutout by striking out the side in the top of the seventh and Colgate secured the doubleheader split with a 3-0 victory in Game 2. Five different Raiders recorded a hit in the win, led by Jacoby's two.
