Colgate University Dean's Award List
HAMILTON – Colgate Athletics has released Dean's Award recipients for the 2019-20 academic year. Nearly 70 percent of these honorees also earned Dean's Award with Distinction honors to continue the department's tradition of academic success.
The Dean's Award is presented to students who receive a term grade point average of 3.3 or higher while completing at least three course credits for a conventional letter grade and a minimum of 3.75 total course credits. Dean's Award with Distinction goes to students earning a term grade point average of 3.6 or higher under the same guidelines.
Colgate faculty liaisons obviously were pleased at the outcomes Raider student-athletes achieved during the 2019-20 school year.
"This academic success of our student-athletes is really a reflection of the culture of excellence instilled in our teams by our coaches, athletics staff, and by the student-athletes, themselves," said Ken Belanger, the Russell Colgate Distinguished Professor of Biology who serves as a football liaison. "Student-athletes come to Colgate expecting to excel both in athletic competition and in their academics, and the support and expectations of their coaches, teammates, professors, and the whole Colgate community helps them thrive and attain those high goals they set for themselves."
The Colgate faculty liaison program provides student-athletes with the opportunity to develop working relationships with Colgate faculty members outside the classroom or formal advising environment in an effort to enhance the academic and athletic experience for all student-athletes.
Krista Ingram, a Professor of Biology and Director of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, serves as liaison to women's basketball. She recognized the difficulties last year brought to this campus.
"I am blown away by the number of Colgate scholar-athletes that are recognized on the Dean's List and Dean's List with Distinction this year. Congratulations! Your ability to achieve recognition in the classroom as well as on the field/rink/court/track and beyond, is both humbling and inspiring.
"This accomplishment is even more remarkable when you consider the challenges of the last eight months due to the Covid pandemic. Your resilience (likely honed over long hours with your team!) motivates the entire Colgate community. We are thrilled to have you back in the classroom, and we can't wait to cheer you on soon, in the near future!"
Brenda Sanya, Assistant Professor of Educational Studies and the softball faculty liaison, also added her praises.
"What a remarkable accomplishment from Colgate's stellar student-athletes! Over the years, I've seen student-athletes bring their disciplined work ethic to the classroom, work collaboratively on group projects, and courteously participate in class discussions. To the athletes on the list, I would like to congratulate you on this well-deserved recognition!"
