Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Freshmen Lead Raiders Versus Bulldogs

Rookies Zac Hamilton and Mike Panowyk Led the Way for No. 6 Colgate Against Yale on Saturday

HAMILTON - Freshman John Baiocco's goal late in the second period proved to be the difference as Yale knocked off sixth-ranked Colgate, 3-1, in ECAC men's ice hockey action Saturday at Starr Rink.

Baiocco's tally at the 17:55 of the second period gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead after junior Rob O'Gara put Yale in front, 1-0, with just three seconds remaining in the opening period. Freshman Mike Panowyk got Colgate on the board with just over six minutes to play in the third, but Yale added an empty-net tally in the final seconds to determine the two-goal margin.

The loss spoiled what was a solid debut between the pipes for Colgate freshman netminder Zac Hamilton. The Ottawa, Ont., native finished the evening with 38 saves in his first career start for the Raiders, including 17 stops in the first period. Yale sophomore Alex Lyon recorded 28 saves in goal for the Bulldogs.

Bottom Line
Yale 3, No. 6 Colgate 1

Won-Lost Records
- Yale improved to 3-2-1 in conference play and 4-2-2 overall as it earned a split of its Central New York road trip.
- Colgate saw its four-game unbeaten streak come to a close as it moved to 3-2-1 in league action and 9-4-1 on the season.

How It Happened
- Yale opened the scoring at the 19:57 mark of the first period on a goal from O'Gara. With five seconds on the clock in the opening frame, sophomore John Hayden won an offensive zone faceoff back to O'Gara, who wired a wrist shot from the right point into the top left-hand corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
- Baiocco doubled the Bulldogs' advantage to 2-0 with the eventual game-winning goal with just over two minutes to play in the second period. Junior Matthew Beatie started the play by knocking down a Colgate clearing attempt at the top of the Raider zone and playing the puck towards the net. Baiocco was able to corral the loose biscuit near the cage and slide into the back of the net for his first collegiate tally.
- Panowyk sliced the Raiders deficit in half when he deflected home a shot from top of the point by junior Ryan Johnston with 13:44 elapsed in the third period for his third goal of the season. Junior Tyson Spink picked up a secondary assist on Panowyk's tally.
- The Raiders would push for the equalizer in the closing minutes, pulling Hamilton for the extra attacker. Yale kept Colgate from tying the game and netted an insurance marker on an empty-net goal by junior Cody Learned with four seconds to play. Junior Carson Cooper picked up an assist on the goal.
