HAMILTON – The Colgate men's tennis team went 1-1 over the weekend with a 7-2 win over Rochester on Sunday afternoon as the Raiders rebounded from a loss at St. Bonaventure on Saturday.
Against the Bonnies, the Raiders came up short for the doubles point with St. Bonaventure winning the top two doubles matchs, while
Mark Pronchick and
Archer McFall were ahead 5-4 when the match was called because the Bonnies had already clinched the point.
The Raiders tried for a comeback with
Luke Gensburg winning in the top spot with a straight-set win at 6-1, 6-2. Pronchick and
John Beam earned victories in their matches as Pronchick got his by a 6-4, 6-4 score and then Beam won 6-2, 7-5 in the sixth spot.
Colgate got back in the win column the next day against the University of Rochester. The Raiders came back to Hamilton with a 7-2 win.
Gensburg and
Alec Goldstein were the lone winners in doubles action as they earned an 8-6 win in the top spot.
Colgate then caught fire by winning all six singles matches. The top four spots were won in straight sets with wins by Gensburg, Goldstein,
Bobby Berkowitz and
Alan Pleat.
Pronchick and McFall went to three sets at the fifth and sixth position. Pronchick dropped the first set by a 6-3 score and then came back to tie the match with a 6-2 victory in the second set. The tiebreaker was won by Pronchick with a 10-6 win. McFall did the opposite, where he won the first set by a 6-4 score and then came up shot in the second, setting up a big tiebreaker. It ended up being very competitive and McFall won 11-9.
“I am so proud of our men,” head coach
Bobby Pennington said. “We have battled through a ton of adversity the last few weeks and earned a hard-fought win today.”
The Raiders will be on a two-week break and will host Merrimack on Feb. 23 in their next match.
