WOMEN'S LAX GAME CENTRAL
HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/20/12) – The Colgate women's lacrosse team will return to New York this week to travel to Binghamton on Wednesday and then back at Tyler's Field for its third league matchup of the season against Holy Cross.
The matchup against Binghamton is at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in Vestal, N.Y., and then the Raiders host the Crusaders on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Tyler's Field. The Holy Cross game will not have live video, but for all your game day needs, log onto the Women's Lacrosse Game Central web page.
THIS WEEK: BACK TO NEW YORK
After spending a week in the D.C. area, the Raiders return to warm weather up in Central New York. Colgate will play its final non-conference game on the road this Wednesday with a visit to the Bearcats. The two schools have played each other the last four years and this will be the third America East opponent for Colgate this season. Binghamton comes into the week with a 2-4 mark and has lost their last two at Lehigh and against La Salle. On Saturday, Holy Cross comes to campus with a 4-4 record and is currently on a three-game winning streak with wins over American, Brown and Sacred Heart.
LAST WEEK: TOUGH LOSS TO AMERICAN
Amanda O'Sullivan and
Courtney Miller combined for nine goals, but the Colgate women's lacrosse team came up shy of a Patriot League victory with a tough 19-18 loss to American on Saturday. The Raiders were led by O'Sullivan and Miller, but also got great contributions from
Quincey Spagnoletti,
Katie Sullivan and
Megan Ark as each had three points on the day.
Alison Flood put in two goals and
Kate Sheridan posted three assists, which tied for the game-high.
Jennie Berglin took the loss for the Raiders in net with three saves, while
Hanna Longwell saw 14 minutes of action and made one stop.
NEXT WEEK: HOMECOOKING CONTINUES WITH YALE
The Raiders will continue its four-game stretch of home games with the Bulldogs coming to Hamilton on March 31 for a 1 p.m. start. Yale will play Boston University, Harvard and Marist before coming to New York. The Bulldogs sit at 2-3 overall this season with a 0-2 mark in the Ivy League. The two wins came against Holy Cross and Bryant, while they took losses to Dartmouth, Notre Dame and Penn. Colgate will be playing Yale in back-to-back years for the first time since 1990-91.
MILLER BREAKS CAREER DRAW CONTROL RECORD
With six draw controls on Saturday against American,
Courtney Miller passed former teammate
Colleen Bubnack '10 for the most draw controls in a career. She has 25 this season and came into the year with 150 in her first two seasons. Bubnack finished her career with 170. Miller has 23 goals in 2012, which has moved her into eighth all-time on the career goals list with 132. She is 10 away from Bubnack for seventh. She has 65 career assists as well for fifth all-time and is two away from fourth and Judi Conroy '89. Finally, she ranks eighth in total points with 197 in her career, which is seven away from seventh and Angela Chongris '98.
KATIE SULLIVAN HAS A GREAT WEEK
Sullivan started last week by earning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week after seven points against Lehigh in Colgate's league-opening win. She followed that up with a seven-point week against UMBC and American. She had four goals against the Retrievers in a 13-11 loss and then had two goals and an assist in the loss to the Eagles. Overall the senior captain is second behind Miller in total points with 19, which have come on 12 goals and seven assists.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
Binghamton has opened the season with two wins in its first six contests. Scoring goals has not been the problem as the Bearcats have scored 10 or more goals in all six games and is averaging over 12 per contest. They earned wins over Marist and Canisius, but are coming off a loss to Lehigh and La Salle last week.
Lis Zuern leads the way for the Bearcats with 23 points on 15 goals and eight assists. She is second in helpers as Kimberly McGeever has 17 to lead all players. Kristen Stone has chipped in with 14 goals and 15 points, while Katherine Hunsberger has been all over the field with 10 goals, 11 ground balls, 12 draw controls and five caused turnovers. In net, Kara Pafumi has played in all six games and has made 44 saves for a .338 save percentage and has a 13.91 goals against average.
SERIES HISTORY
The series with Binghamton is a recent one that began in 2008 and these two schools have played one another every year since. Colgate owns a 3-1 advantage in the series, including a 19-9 win last season at home. The Bearcats took the first-ever meeting in 2008 by a 12-11 score on its home field.
SCOUTING HOLY CROSS
The Crusaders have gotten off to a decent start this season with a 4-4 record overall and they won their first Patriot League contest with a 12-8 win over American on March 10. Holy Cross is on a three-game winning steak when the Crusaders visit Hamilton and have averaged over 10 goals per win this season. They have improved a lot from last season as it took them 13 games to get win number four in 2011 and they have it after game eight.
Taylor Zebrowski is tops on the team with 28 points on 20 goals and eight assists. Kayla DiBari is second with 23 points and leads Holy Cross with 11 assists. Sara Hennessey is not far behind Zebrowski as she has 19 tallies and also has 10 ground balls and 19 draw controls. Laura Ryan has had a good eight games with 12 goals and four assists, along with 18 ground balls and 33 draw controls. In net, Sarah Weber has started all eight games and has a 4-3 overall record. She has made 54 stops on 94 shots for a .365 save percentage and she has posted a 12.44 goals against average.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 28th meeting between Colgate and Holy Cross with the Raiders holding a 20-7 advantage in the series. Colgate is currently on a four-game winning streak, which followed a four-game streak by the Crusaders from 2006 to 2007, including two wins in the Patriot League Tournament. The teams first met back in 1985 with the Raiders coming away with a 15-2 win at home.
