WASHINGTON, D.C. (3/17/12) – Amanda O'Sullivan and
Courtney Miller combined for nine goals, but the Colgate women's lacrosse team came up shy of a Patriot League victory with a tough 19-18 loss to American on Saturday.
The Raiders (1-7, 1-1 PL) were led by O'Sullivan and Miller, but also got great contributions from
Quincey Spagnoletti,
Katie Sullivan and
Megan Ark as each had three points on the day.
Alison Flood put in two goals and
Kate Sheridan posted three assists, which tied for the game-high.
Jennie Berglin took the loss for the Raiders in net with three saves, while
Hanna Longwell saw 14 minutes of action and made one stop.
The Eagles (4-4, 1-0 PL) had most of their goals from Kimberly Collins, Samantha Marshall and Emily Burton. Collins had five scores, while Marshall and Burton had four apiece to combine for 13 of the 19 goals. Lauren Schoenberger had a big day as well with six points on three goals and three assists. Kaska Komosinski earned the start in net and made nine stops with seven of them coming in the first half.
Colgate was able to get out to a 2-0 lead as Flood and Sheridan added the two goals. They came 24 seconds apart five minutes into the game. Marshall answered seven minutes later to put the Eagles on the board. Miller then tallied the first of her four on the day with a free-position goal to make it 3-1 Raiders. American fired back with four-straight goals to take its first lead of the game at 5-3 with 14:14 remaining in the first half. Marshall had two of the goals, while Collins and Paige Lin scored the other two. The four goals came in a span of four minutes.
Ark stopped the run with her sixth of the season with the assist to Sheridan at the 12:14 mark of the American got two back to push its lead up to 7-4 with 10:03 left in the opening half. Emily Burton and Lin scored for the home team. The Raiders came back to score three of the next four goals with Miller, Spagnoletti and O'Sullivan scoring. The American lead was cut down to 8-7, but Collins netted her second of the half to give the Eagles a 9-7 lead going into halftime.
Colgate came out in the second half ready to go with back-to-back goals from O'Sullivan and Sullivan to tie the game at 9-9 just two minutes into the second half. The teams then traded goals over the next three minutes with Ark and Miller scoring for Colgate and the score was tied at 11-11. The Raiders got their first lead since 3-1 in the first as Flood scored her second of the day with 23:36 remaining in the game to give Colgate a 12-11 lead.
The advantage didn't hold up long as American answered with three-straight goals, including two from Collins to give the Eagles a 14-12 lead. O'Sullivan single-handily got Colgate back in the game with a pair of unassisted goals to tie it 14-14. America retook the lead at 15-14, but Colgate attacked for three-straight to get a 17-15 advantage on goals by Sullivan, O'Sullivan and Miller. American, however, came back to end the game on a 4-1 run and earned a 19-18 win. Schoenberger had the gamewinner with one second left in the game.
Colgate outshot the Eagles by a 31-25 advantage, but American won both the ground ball and draw control battle.
The Raiders will return to New York for a matchup against Binghamton on March 21.
