HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/18/12)
– The No. 19 Colgate men's lacrosse team secured its second win of the season on Saturday afternoon when it defeated Vermont 10-6 at Andy Kerr Stadium to improve its record to 2-0.

Senior co-captain Jeff Ledwick led the way with four points from three goals and one assist while classmate Colby Wilson and junior Peter Baum also recorded a hat trick in the game with three goals apiece. Junior Matt Baker also added one tally while freshman Ryan Walsh had his first collegiate multi-point game with two assists.

Colgate (2-0) got off to a quick start in the opening period, finding an early goal from Ledwick just 34 seconds into play to give the team a 1-0 lead. Less than 60 seconds later, Ledwick struck again with a second goal at the 13:31 mark to increase the Raiders' lead to two goals. Feeling the pressure of the two-goal deficit, Vermont soon picked up its pace as it attacked Colgate's net but could not find an opening tally. It was not until the 5:01 mark that the Catamounts were able to score off a quick clear to reduce the score to 2-1 at the end of the first 15 minutes of play.

The Raiders came out to an aggressive start in the second frame, winning the first faceoff and forcing Vermont's goalie to make a save. However, it was not enough to discourage the Catamounts who then found an equalizer at the 13:17 mark. The loss of the early lead gave Colgate the push it needed, answering back less than a minute later with a goal from Baker with an assist from Ledwick to put the score at 3-2. Both teams then began to play a more aggressive game, which soon led to a pair of slashing penalties being called against the Raiders to give Vermont the first extra man opportunity of the game. The Catamounts did not hesitate to capitalize, tying up the game once again at 3-3 with 7:41 left in the quarter. The physical play continued throughout the period, which allowed Colgate to find a man-up goal from Wilson at the 5:27 mark with an assist from Walsh, to reclaim a 4-3 lead at half time.

The third period began in an opposite fashion to the second, with Vermont winning the faceoff and firing the first shot of the frame. This time around it was the Raiders that found their fifth goal with a powerful shot from Baum to increase their lead to two goals at the 12:48 mark. Wilson then added a second goal for Colgate with help from freshman Matt Clarkson less than two minutes later to double its lead with the score at 6-3. Both teams were then able to find two goals each in the final eight minutes of the frame to put the score at 8-5 going into the final 15 minutes of play. Vermont scored first but was repaid with a pair of goals from Baum and Ledwick before finding its sixth goal at the 1:25 mark. Baum was assisted by sophomore Jimmy Ryan and Ledwick was helped by Walsh in his man-up tally.

The Catamounts opened fourth quarter scoring with a goal at the 8:59 mark, however it was not enough to topple Colgate which went on to score twice more in the final two minutes of the game to secure the 10-6 win. Colby scored the ninth goal with help from junior Connor Brown while Baum tallied the final goal of the game unassisted.

Senior goalie Jared Madison had 10 saves for the Raiders, four of which were in the third period, while David Barton had 13 for Vermont. Colgate went 3-for-8 on its extra man opportunities while holding the Catamounts to only one goal in their three advantages.

The Raiders will resume play next weekend when it hosts Dartmouth in its third-straight home contest on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.
