Raiders Split Day One at Stevens Industries Tournament

– Behind five hits from sophomore Alana Dyson mixed with some strong pitching the Colgate Softball team was able to split a pair of games Friday afternoon at the Stevens Industries Tournament. The Raiders dropped the first game to Tennessee-Martin 2-1 in nine innings, before topping Dartmouth 6-1 in the second game.

In the first game, Colgate (1-1) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the eighth inning beginning with a sac bunt by freshman Rachel LeCoq that moved Emma Dolfi to third. Natalie Siedhof then singled up the middle to give the Raiders the 1-0 advantage.

Tennessee-Martin (8-6) started the bottom of the inning with a sac bunt to advance Chelsea Carey to third with one out. Laurie Lindow then grounded out to shortstop Jennifer Ortega, but Cary was able to score to tie the game 1-1.

After the Raiders went down in order in the top of the ninth inning, the Skyhawks were able to win the game on a sacrifice fly to left field by Jordan Garrett.

Sophomore pitcher Courtney O'Connell completed the game by surrendering only four hits and tossing five strikeouts, while the Skyhawks Kate Vanderham posted identical numbers in the win.

In game two, Colgate scored four runs in the sixth inning to help LeCoq grab her first collegiate win in the circle. LeCoq pitched a complete game giving up six hits while recording seven strikeouts.

The Raiders scored first in the second inning after loading the bases with two outs. Freshman Tera Vaughn started the rally with a single to the left, followed by another single down the right field line by Siedhof. LeCoq then walked to load the bases before Dyson singled up the middle to score Vaughan from third.

Dartmouth (0-2) answered back with a run of its own in the top of the fourth. But Colgate was able to answer back with a run in the bottom half on the inning on a single by LeCoq to score Vaughan to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead.

Colgate then extended its lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning . The Raiders scored first off a hit a from Jennifer Ortega that brought home Dyson, followed by single from Siedhof to right center that scored Ortega and Haley Fleming. Siedhof then scored on an illegal pitch.

The Raiders are back in action on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against St. John's before turning their attention to host FGCU at 6 p.m. on the second day of the Steven Industries Tournament.
