HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/15/11) – The Colgate men's lacrosse team dropped its first home game of the season on Tuesday night when it fell to Binghamton 7-6. Despite making a late comeback in the final quarter to tie the game, the Raiders could not secure the win.

Senior Ben McCabe led the team with three goals while sophomore Peter Baum, senior co-captain Andrew Mould and junior Jeff Ledwick added one goal each.

Binghamton came out to a strong start, creating the first three scoring opportunities but could not get past junior goalkeeper Jared Madison. As the period progressed, Colgate (4-3, 1-0 PL) came alive, making some strong defensive plays and attacking the Bearcats' net aggressively. However, despite outshooting Binghamton 8-4, the team could not find success.

After a scoreless first quarter, both teams came out searching for a goal in the second 15 minutes of play. The Bearcats got on the scoreboard early with a man-up goal at the 14:31 mark to take the 1-0 lead. The Raiders then picked up the pace and found the net minutes later from Ledwick at the 9:30 mark to tie the game at 1-1. The teams continued to play hard but a penalty at the 8:10 mark allowed Binghamton to capitalize on another man-up advantage to take the 2-1 lead, which they held going into half time.

Both teams came out to a quick start, making one impressive play after another as they battled it out on the field. The Bearcats attacked first, hitting the post less than a minute into the period. Feeling the pressure, Colgate struck back with a goal from Baum at the 10:08 mark to tie the game at 2-2 once again. A tough two minutes then led to Binghamton scoring a pair of goals to take the 4-2 lead at the 8:15 mark. Determined to cut their opponent's lead, the Raiders soon found their rhythm, firing a series of shots at the Bearcats' net but could not get passed Kraig Heston who made one stop after the next. Binghamton then found a goal with just 1:31 left in the quarter to take the 5-2 lead.

Not deterred by the three-goal deficit, the Raiders came out to an explosive start with a goal from McCabe just six seconds into the final quarter to put the score at 5-3. The Bearcats responded with a sixth goal at the 12:42 mark but then a pair of goals from McCabe at the 9:13 and 8:03 marks then reduced Binghamton's lead to just one goal. Freshman Connor Brown was credited with an assist in the second goal. Colgate continued to play aggressively on both ends of the field, attacking Binghamton's net and forcing Heston to make some tough saves. With just 3:28 left on the clock, the Raiders were rewarded with an equalizer to put the score at 6-6. However, a late goal from the Bearcats at the two-minute mark brought the team's four-game winning streak to an end, 7-6.

Colgate outshot the Bearcats 39-23, forcing Heston to make 17 saves while Madison had eight stops for the Raiders.

The team will continue play this weekend when it travels to Fairfield, Conn. for a matchup against Fairfield on Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m.
