SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Colgate fell to Syracuse, 14-7, on Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome. Despite a strong third quarter, during which the Raiders scored three goals and converted on a man-up opportunity, the Orange's consistent scoring across all quarters enabled them to prevail.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game commenced with the Raiders controlling the initial faceoff, but the Orange struck first with three quick goals to take a 3-0 lead. Syracuse's Joey Spallina assisted on the team's second goal, becoming the program's all-time points leader. Colgate's Tristan Schaefer got the Raiders on the board, tallying his first collegiate goal.
Emmet Crotty capitalized on an extra-man opportunity to bring Colgate within one. However, Syracuse added two more goals, giving the Orange a 5-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Syracuse maintained its lead in the second quarter despite Colgate's attempts to close the gap. Luke Rhoa extended the advantage for Syracuse with a goal to push the lead to four. Colgate responded with a goal from Hunter Drouin, marking his 24th of the season.
Andrew Lehrman, Colgate's goalkeeper, forced an Orange turnover that led to Carter Cadin's first goal of the season, bringing the score to 6-4. Syracuse halted Colgate's momentum by scoring with four minutes remaining, setting the halftime score at 7-4 in favor of the home team.
The teams battled in the third quarter, with six total goals scored, three by each team. Casey Quinson opened the scoring for the Raiders with a man-up goal, assisted by Crotty. Syracuse responded with three consecutive goals, including a man-up score.
Colgate then mounted a comeback as Quinson scored again, assisted by Drouin. Freddy Fowler added another goal for the Raiders, also assisted by Drouin, closing the quarter with Colgate trailing 10-7.
Syracuse secured a decisive victory in the final quarter, outscoring Colgate 4-0. The Raiders attempted three shots but were unable to score. Lehrman faced 14 shots in the final quarter, making five saves to limit further damage. Syracuse finished the game with a 14-7 victory over Colgate.
