LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (9/4/10) – Rider netted four first half goals and the Colgate field hockey team couldn't recover as the Raiders dropped their second game of the season by a 5-0 margin on Saturday afternoon.
Colgate (1-2) was led by senior captain and goalkeeper
Kirsten Lalli (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) stepped up her game with 21 saves and it was her second straight game that she had made 20-plus saves. Sophomore
Anna Reddicliffe (Larchmont, N.Y.) had a team-high two shots on net.
Rider (2-0) got two goals and an assist from Sandra Penas for three points on the day. Penas was joined by Megan Pasani, Lindsay Rajeski and Shari Grinceri on the score sheet. In net, Rachel Yacovett was only tested twice and made each of the saves to earn the win.
The Broncs didn't waste time getting on the board as Penas added the first of her two on the day five minutes into the contest. She fired a shot from the top of the circle and past Lalli to earn the first lead. Pasani increased the advantage to 2-0 after Lalli made a save on her initial shot, but Pasani followed the rebound and hit the net for the score.
Pasani's goal opened the gates as Rider added two goals in the next four minutes. Rajeski made it 3-0 with the assist going to Virginia Egusquiza. Just under two minutes later, Penas found the net for the second time with 5:10 left in the half to push the advantage to 4-0 going into halftime.
The teams played scoreless for the final 35 minutes, but Rider was awarded a penalty with no time remaining and capitalized on the free possession. Grinceri scored at the 70-minute mark to close the game and give the Broncs a 5-0 win.
Rider finished with 34 shots to four from the Raiders. Twenty-six of the 34 attacks were put on net. The Broncs dominated in the penalty corner count with a 19-2 advantage.
Colgate will be back in action tomorrow at noon as the Raiders travel to Monmouth to face the Hawks in another non-conference road game.
