Colgate Pushes Past Stonehill, 2–1

Van Kempen's last minute save helps the Raiders prevail 2–1

HAMILTON — Colgate found the back of the net twice before Stonehill could strike to secure a 2–1 non-conference victory.

The Raiders defense held strong, with Claire van Kempen totaling six saves, and a key save in the last 10 seconds of the match. This victory avenged their earlier 3-2 defeat against Stonehill in the 2024 season.

COACH CORNELL-DEANGELIS' COMMENTS
"I think it was a great team win. We weren't happy with our performance yesterday and we needed to come back, make some changes, and come out to win every ball. We came out and had the mindset of knowing how to win the play and to be composed in those moments. We still have a lot to grow and improve upon but most importantly, knowing that we can win and knowing how to really execute in those moments with our corner execution is big."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter between the Raiders and the Skyhawks began with both teams establishing their defenses early.
  • Stonehill initiated an offensive attempt with a penalty corner, but it was blocked by the Raiders' defense.
  • The second quarter commenced with the Raiders holding strong defensively, as van Kempen made crucial saves against shots from Stonehill's attack.
  • This defensive momentum set the stage for Colgate's offensive breakthrough, with Morgan Willis scoring the quarter's only goal in the 19th minute, assisted by Tyler Argilagos. This goal marked Willis's eighth of the season and gave the Raiders a 1–0 lead, while Argilagos logged her first point of the season with the assist.
  • Van Kempen made another save off a Skyhawk shot, but despite several penalty corners and shots from Stonehill, the Raiders' defense held firm, ending the quarter with a 1–0 advantage.
  • Dani Palmer opened the third quarter capitalizing on a penalty corner in the 39th minute to extend their lead to 2–0. Annie Lake and Kyleigh Welusz provided the assists on Palmer's third goal of the season.
  • Stonehill responded later in the quarter, narrowing the gap to 2–1 with a goal following a penalty corner.
  • Colgate earned a penalty corner in the 47th minute, but Ahria Dhillon's shot was on target and saved by Stonehill's goalkeeper.
  • Van Kempen made a significant save in the 59th minute on a shot by Stonehill's attack to close the game 2–1.

GAME NOTES
  • The Raiders matched their same number of wins as last season with four more matches left to play in the regular season.
  • Van Kempen recorded six saves, allowing just one goal during the match.
  • Palmer and Willis found the back of the net and recorded a shot apiece.
  • Argilagos contributed with an assist, aiding the offensive efforts.
