HAMDEN, Conn. (9/12/10) – The Colgate field hockey team had a one-goal lead at the half, but Quinnipiac answered with a pair scores in the second half to hand the Raiders a 2-1 loss on Sunday.
Colgate (1-5) got a score from sophomore
Adriana Libutti (South Windsor, Conn.) as she returned to her home state. Senior captain
Kirsten Lalli (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) pushed aside 10 shots and reached double-digit stops in back-to-back games and for the fourth time this year.
The Bobcats (2-3) saw Tina Watkins post a goal and an assist for three points, while Kimberly Cunniff finished with the game-winner coming late in the second half. Goalkeeper Nicole Lewis made two saves on three shots on goal by Colgate.
The Raiders took the first lead of the game with 4:11 left in the opening half. It came on Colgate's third shot on goal of the game with Libutti netting her second of the season. Freshman
Halle Biggar (Pepper Pike, Ohio) put a shot on net that was stopped by Lewis, but the ball came loose and Libutti was there for the cleanup and make it 1-0.
Lalli stopped all five shots by the Bobcats in the first half and both teams were given two penalty corners in the first 35 minutes.
Quinnipiac evened the score at 1-1 with 16:40 remaining in the game with Watkins scoring her first goal of the season with the assist going to Katie Van Nostrand. The goal came on a penalty corner with Watkins firing a shot from the right side and past Lalli.
The Bobcats took their first lead of the game at 2-1 with 9:02 left in the contest. The score came on another penalty corner with Cunniff firing a shot from the top of the circle and found the net for her first of the season.
Quinnipiac had a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal and collected eight penalty corners to only four for the Raiders.
The Raiders return home this coming Wednesday for the first time since Aug. 30. Colgate will take on Siena in a 7 p.m. midweek matchup at Tyler's Field.
