CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (3/16/10) – The Colgate men's lacrosse team got a four point outing from senior
Ian Murphy (Constantia, N.Y.), but fell to No. 11 Harvard 11-8 in an afternoon affair at Cumnock Field.
Murphy scored two goals and assisted on two more while freshman
Peter Baum (Portland, Ore.) scored three times and junior
Ben McCabe (Brunswick, Maine) added a pair for the Raiders, who dropped their third straight game.
Harvard scored six-straight goals to begin the second half and was able to withstand a late Raider surge to grab its first win over Colgate since the 2003 season.
Both teams exchanged a pair of goals in the opening period, before the Crimson scored in the final 20 seconds to take a 3-2 lead. The Raiders then responded with four goals in the second quarter to build a 6-4 halftime lead.
Baum opened the quarter with his second goal of the game to tie the score 3-3. McCabe followed with his fourth man-up goal of the year to give Colgate its first lead, 4-3, with 10:13 remaining. After a Crimson goal tied the score, McCabe struck again off an assist from freshman
Connor Brown (Pleasantville, N.Y.) to put Colgate back on top 5-4. Murphy then added to the lead with his sixth goal of the season, off an assist from sophomore
Patrick Campbell (Massapequa, N.Y.) to give the Raiders a two goal lead.
The Crimson outscored Colgate 4-0 in the third quarter and added two more in the fourth to build a 10-6. The Raiders tried to start a late rally, when Baum scored his third goal of the game, 11th of the season, from a Murphy assist with 2:42 remaining and was followed by and unassisted goal from
Andrew Mould (Wyomissing, Pa.) 35 seconds later to trim the lead to 10-8 with 2:07 remaining. The Raiders would fire off a couple more shots, before a turnover in the closing seconds would lead to Harvard's final goal.
Sophomore
Jared Madison (Lawrenceville, N.J.) tallied a career-high 14 saves in the loss for Colgate, while Christian Coates saved six in the second half for Harvard.
Colgate will return home on Saturday (March 20) to face Fairfield. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Andy Kerr Stadium and can be seen live on Colgate All-Access.
