WORCESTER, Mass. (3/13/10) – Holy Cross' James Kennedy scored with three seconds remaining to top Colgate, 9-8, in Patriot League play, Saturday at Holy Cross Field. The loss snapped a 20-game winning streak for Colgate over the Crusaders.
After trailing most of the game Colgate took an 8-7 lead off a goal by sophomore
Patrick Campbell (Massapequa, N.Y.) with 10:06 remaining. The Crusaders tied the game five minutes later before Kennedy scored in the closing seconds.
Campbell led the Raiders in scoring with three goals, while classmate
Chris Zielinski (Lancaster, Pa.) recorded a career-high three assists. Junior
Ben McCabe (Brunswick, Maine) also recorded three points off two goals and an assist.
Senior
Michael Crown (Winnetka, Ill.) opened the scoring, just 27 seconds into the game. The goal was Crown's second of the season and was assisted by junior
Rob Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.). Holy Cross would respond with a pair of goals before Campbell would tie the game 2-2 off an assist from freshman
Connor Brown (Pleasantville, N.Y.).
The Crusaders then scored four straight goals in the second quarter to build a 6-2 lead, before Campbell found the back of the net with 29 seconds remaining to trim the lead to 6-3 at the half.
Senior
Ian Murphy (Constantia, N.Y.) and freshman
Peter Baum (Portland, Ore.) scored the first two goals of the second half to narrow the Crusaders lead to 6-5. Holy Cross would increase its lead to 7-5, but the Raiders would respond with three straight goals to take an 8-7 lead with 10:06 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore
Jared Madison (Lawrenceville, N.J.) tallied seven stops in the loss for Colgate, while Connor Sweeney saved seven for Holy Cross.
Colgate returns to action Tuesday (March 16) at Harvard. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
